TV Alert: London Spy
To paraphrase Ben Whishaw who stars in this BBC2 drama: London Spy is the least spy thriller-y spy thriller ever made. Having watched the first episode, I'll say it's probably one of the most Ben Whishaw-y Ben Whishaw projects ever made. I don't know if the creators of this miniseries were looking for an actor to fit perfectly into their slightly dreamy, angsty, melancholy story or if Ben Whishaw's agent is always casting the net for scripts like this. But either way, it's a pretty engrossing piece of TV so far.

The basic premise is about Danny (Whishaw) an ordinary bloke who gets pulled into the world of spies and espionage when his partner, Alex (Edward Holcroft) is mysteriously killed. The first three fourths of the first episode is watching Danny and Alex meet and rather quickly fall in love despite the fact they seem to come from completely different worlds with completely different temperaments. The last quarter kicks off the more suspense stuff when Alex turns up dead.

I don't completely agree with Whishaw that this isn't a very thriller-y series. The last quarter actually had me more tense than any action spy film I've ever seen. You can watch the trailer for the series below.
