Meme (The Couples Kind Again)
Originally introduced to me by awanderingbard:

I did Howard and Maria Stark because I'm trying to get a handle on their marriage for a thing.

big spoon/little spoon:
It's changed. In the beginning, Howard was the big spoon when he and Maria used to go to bed around the same time. Later on, when Howard came to bed much later, he'd just keep to his side of the bed to not wake Maria. Or he'd stay in his lab.

favorite non-sexual activity:
Building things together. Howard liked to say that Maria's self-made incubator impressed him so much, he didn't even notice the killer legs she had. In the beginning, the one thing Maria liked about Howard was that unlike most men she'd run across, he was objective about her work as a scientist. Howard built on that one positive assessment.

what has a season pass on their dvr/who controls the netflix queue:
DVR and Netflix didn't exist back then. But all cultural engagements and outings were arranged by Maria with some help from Jarvis who had a more accurate read of how long an opera Howard would be able to tolerate.

who uses all the hot water:
In terms of daily, usually Howard. But on the weekends, Maria enjoys long hot baths.

most trivial thing they fight over:
Where Maria's parents are to stay when they come to visit. Maria always wants to have them close to her and Howard's rooms in the mansion. Howard doesn't see why it's so terrible to have them be in a different wing. That's what mansions with wings are for. As well as spare penthouses. During that one Christmas when his in-laws came for two weeks, he offered to purchase an entire hotel just for their use, he got so desperate.

who cooks normally?:
The Starks have multiple chefs to take care of the daily meals. Maria sometimes likes to make escudella on her own when she's in need of a pick me up. Howard once tried to help her in the early days of their marriage but got distracted by how he might augment the stove to heat the water faster. After that, Maria banned him.

who kissed who first?:
Howard because he's Howard.

who does most of the cleaning:
Like chefs, the Starks have a full cleaning staff. However, Howard usually cleans up his own lab as he doesn't trust anyone to tidy without setting something off.

who calls up the super/landlord when the heat’s not working:
They've got Jarvis to call maintenance men when things stop working. If it's super late at night and he's still up, Howard would just fix it.

who remembers anniversaries:
At the start of their marriage, neither was that great at remembering things like that. Toward the end of their marriage, it was mostly Maria.

How often do they fight?
In the beginning, they bickered more rather than fought. And it was never over anything big. After Tony was born and Howard's work at SHIELD intensified along with his drinking, they fought almost weekly. By the end of their marriage, Maria had accepted certain things about Howard as a husband and focused her attention on trying to provide Tony with a happier childhood. With this in mind, she rarely argued with Howard verbally but mainly did cold, disappointed looks of disapproval. Howard probably missed the days when they actually fought out loud.

What do they do when they’re away from each other?
Both tend to work when they're away from each other.

Nicknames for each other?
When they first met, both Howard and Maria, for different reasons, did not want to become spouses. After they got married, they would sometimes affectionately call each other "wife" and "marido."

Who is more likely to pay for dinner?
Howard. Especially in New York where he has standing accounts in just about every upscale restaurant.

Who steals the covers at night?
They both tend to kick the covers aside during the night.

What would they get each other for gifts?
Howard has never gotten Maria the typical gifts he usually got his girlfriends (e.g. jewelry, clothes, cars). He did once buy her a centrifuge which she loved so he's stuck with lab equipment. Maria knew from the beginning that getting Howard any kind of object was pointless since he could afford to get it himself and probably already had. Instead she tends to give him the gift of time by clearing his schedule of board meetings and press conferences on his birthdays so he can enjoy his day either in his lab or elsewhere.

Who swears more?
Probably Howard. Although there are plenty of times when Maria gets angry she says a bunch of very angry sounding words to Howard in Spanish and there's probably swearing in there, he's guessing.

What would they do if the other one was hurt?
Howard would hire the best specialist in the world to come treat whatever it is Maria might have. Maria would roll up her sleeves and try to actively help, rather than just stand by and await news.

Who started the relationship?
They both sort of started it together. After having a working relationship for a bit, Howard took Maria out for a night in New York when she first moved there and at the end of the evening she told him it was fun but she wasn't interested in being one of his many girlfriends. Howard agreed to that and asked her out again a week later after breaking up with everyone else.

Toughest decision they've made?
To get married. Howard had lingering commitment issues and Maria wasn't sure if she wanted to become "someone's wife," fearing it would mean all her own work would get buried under that. Particularly since being the wife of Howard Stark would mean a lot of social engagements where she would have to be "the wife." They talked about it, though, and eventually agreed to it. Especially after Maria got pregnant.

Aww, this is very sweet, but realistic. I like the headcanon you have for them. I've been working on my own Howard and Maria for a Fic, so it's cool to compare notes.

My favourite bit is Howrd breaking up with everyone to win Maria over. That's awesome, and really, oddly sweet. I do love their 'let's science!' relationship.

Me too. However, I always tend to think in daemons whenever I think about this. Like, I have a much easier time picturing Tomor and Dejeni building stuff together and excitedly jumping around their inventions.

Re:
Yeah, I have to play the 'is this a daemon fic or not?' before I start things, and no matter which one I choose, there's always some point in the middle when I wished I'd chosen the other. For some reason, I find Bruce and Tony tend to have daemons in my head, but Tony and Pepper don't. I'm not sure if it's because I don't know much about Lev yet, or if there's something about Tony and Pepper's relationship that I don't need to have daemons in order to make the feels happen.

I do think characters are slightly different when they have daemons than when they don't. Tony's a lot more excitable when Mim is with him, and Steve is more standoffish because a lot of his kindness and naivety gets transferred to Issie.
