Night Vale: Old Oak Doors, Part B
FINALLY.

I'm SO relieved that the episode has aired because now I can finally talk about all the spoilers. Man, it was so hard not screaming about what happened to everyone.

Okay, so first off, I know some were disappointed with the rather swift way StrexCorp was ultimately defeated. I will admit that given the extremely long build up, the resolution felt quick by comparison. But I was really glad that the podcast finally came to some sort of endpoint with this plot arc because it was starting to get a little tiresome in that we had so many questions and so few answers. Plus, it looked like we weren't going to get that many answers at all so if that's the case I'd rather the story itself conclude. So I was okay with that part. While I do hope for some one off episodes, the conclusion of the StrexCorp story left open a lot of potential new plot arcs. The most obvious one being OMG SOMEONE GET CARLOS OUT OF THAT DESERT OTHERWORLD!!!

I am both pleased and sort of shaking my fist that the podcast is also doing a "Carlos Has Been Cast Out of Night Vale" plot. Mainly because I know they'll do a much better job than I in my fic. That one monologue where Carlos explained everything was both hilarious ("So those are some but not all the emotions that I had.") as well as heartbreaking ("But then I remembered that I'm not from Night Vale."). I'm sort of going with the idea that Carlos has so integrated into Night Vale that he plainly forgot he's not a native and thus didn't hustle to exit the doors rather than he was too gleefully lost in some scientific observation to pay attention because GODDAMIT, CARLOS!

But I now have MANY questions. So Carlos can't even remember how he got to Night Vale (how the hell DID he get there???) but does he remember where he's originally from? If so, where the hell is that? What about the rest of his science team? Do they remember where they came from? Was Carlos, in fact, originally a government spy who was sent in to run covert experiments on Night Vale but then go supremely sidetracked?

Speaking of conspiracy theories, STEVE CARLSBERG!! All his impressions of everyone was great! In hearing that part, I realized they've broadcast the later show version. At the earlier show that I attended, Cecil commented that Steve's impression of Carlos' sounded like "a witch of some kind" rather than a munchkin. But either way, HAHAHAHAA!!!

The scene with Steve and Kevin was also the first time I started wondering about Kevin's backstory. He talks about how he was once so against Strex, like the most vocally opposed before he got converted. That kind of made me sad to think about, that Kevin got this brainwashed and yet a small piece of him may still balk at the company line. I don't know. It was the first time I started to think about Kevin as something other than the creepiest doppelganger of Cecil. Also, if Steve pushed him through the doors does that mean he's going to run into Carlos?

And finally, election day! I knew Dana was going to win. I would have been more surprised had either the Faceless Old Woman or Hiram won (I voted for the Faceless Old Woman at the live show, by the by, not that it mattered). But it sounds like neither is going to take this lying down so I expect we'll hear more campaigning in the future.

I felt like the 2nd anniversary was a treat for anyone who has kept up with and remembered the show from the early days. We had Cecil talk about so many past characters coming back to fight Strex: Nazr al-Mujaheed, Old Woman Josie, Leann Hart, even the pack of wild dogs (aka some plastic bags). It was great to hear the entire laundry list of characters.

So here's hoping that the podcast will give us some one offs and then perhaps return to the Cecil backstory because I'm still really curious about that. And obviously getting Carlos out of the otherworld desert place. But like he said, at least he and Cecil can still talk every night because neverending batteries!

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH Yeah I can see why it was hard not to talk about this one for a month!!!

We got more resolution for Strex than I was expecting, tbh - showdowns at the radio station is way more action than Cecil is usually personally involved with; and he actually describes events outside, rather than just *handwavy* "stuff happened during the weather!". And while it happened all in one ep technically, if it had taken the same amount of time as normal eps it would've been at least 3 eps long, spread out over a whole month. So yeah, for a lot of shows it might've been anti-climatic (and I could see how it could be that way for fans who have built up Strex in their fanon) but for WTNV it was fitting.

--Not to mention, it's not all over, especially with Kevin still being out there...and maybe where Carlos is??? Ohhhhh dear...with Kevin what I can't tell is, is his bloodthirstiness due to him being broken by the light of the smiling god...or is that how Kevin was all along? (especially given Lauren's disturbed reaction to Kevin training his StrexPet to eat mice...even for Strex he was creepy, but maybe his mind was just extra broken...?)

And Carlos~~~~! So want more about Carlos - how did he get to Night Vale, and where he came from before (if he remembers) - yes yes yes! I'm wondering if Carlos might escape from the desert into the real world...him calling Cecil from reality could be interesting...as long as he does make it back, but I kind of think he has to, I can't imagine how they could keep Night Vale's paradoxically happy attitude without a reunion at the end of this storyline (I mean, they defeated Strex with, as far as I recall, zero casualties among named chars? Provided intern Maureen survived her trip to the library...) But it might take a while, since there are opportunities for stories in the separation (and it's Cecil & Carlos's anniversary, too - either their second if you're counting from first meeting, or first if you're counting from getting together, but either way awwww sad...)

And I am so curious where the story is going now - have my fingers crossed for more Cecil backstory, yesssss~!

I'm rather impressed that most fans kept the events pretty quiet. Other than the panic over what happens to the Carlos/Cecil.

Yeah, I wondered if Kevin was so anti-Strex in the beginning that when he broke he broke HARD and went legit crazy.

But it might take a while, since there are opportunities for stories in the separation (and it's Cecil & Carlos's anniversary, too - either their second if you're counting from first meeting, or first if you're counting from getting together, but either way awwww sad...)

I'm really curious about Cecil's take on the separation. At least he does get to talk to Carlos and probably email as well since Carlos has decent wifi where ever he is. But obviously it's not the same.

Yeah, even the Carlos/Cecil spoilers were at a minimum - I saw enough to suspect Carlos wasn't coming home so easily (and that was mostly from the official Twitters) but not more. Good job, WTNV fandom!

I am so curious how Cecil is going to react, yes! On the one hand he's obviously going to miss Carlos; on the other, compared to what could've happened to him... But for them to leave it until the end, so you (or at least me!) spent Cecil's whole final monologue going COME ON CHECK YOUR PHONE ALREADY!!!! - so cruel! They really know how to play us like a fiddle ;)

I was practically squirming in my seat during the live show during Cecil's monologue. CHECK YOUR PHONE!!!

Since Dana mentioned that time works differently in the outerworld desert, you can reply to emails and voicemails before they've even been sent. I wonder if the show will pick up on this and have Cecil and Carlos responding to things out of sync. It'd be kind of funny. Carlos would probably say something about inventing a highly scientific device to help him keep track on their communication (aka a pencil and paper).

Fingers crossed for some out-of-syncing, that could be great fun (I just posted a little reaction fic in which there's a slightly time-displaced Skype call...)

I just read it.

*sniff*

I'M NOT CRYING, YOU'RE CRYING!!

Carlos trying to give Cecil an out and Cecil reiterating how happy he is was painful in that "Oh gosh, I'm glad this story is reminding me I have a heart by breaking it" sort of way.

...Happy to be of service? ^^; But yeah, these two will be the death of me...
