The Once And Future King
It was announced today that Merlin has been officially canceled after 5 seasons.

The last two part series finale will air in late December in the UK.

The news might have struck me as sadder had I not grown apathetic to this show since series 5 started. The more I watched the episodes of late, the more I got the sinking feeling that the show was never going to allow for Merlin to reveal his magic to Arthur and that more and more the former was just digging his and Arthur's own graves through his lack of action. There seemed to be several moments in this season and last where Arthur felt ready to hear the big reveal. His mind was open and the situation was aligned. And yet Merlin did nothing. It started to feel like the writers were working toward a dark irony storyline for Merlin that somewhere in his mission to make Arthur a great king, he'd forgotten WHY Arthur needed to be a great king and it would be that that would lead to Arthur's demise at the hands of Mordred. I also wasn't too pleased with the recent storyline for an enchanted Gwen which just recycled the "traitor among us" plot as well as "Gwen being enchanted so she has no culpability" plot from the whole Lancelot debacle.

I really, really, REALLY wanted the show to give us at least one season post-magic reveal where we could finally enjoy Merlin using his magic openly and we would finally get the Golden Age of Camelot that has long been hinted at. After 4 seasons of watching Merlin operate in the shadows and angsting over having to hide himself, the idea that the show would end without us getting the gratification of the magic reveal and its fallout is pretty aggravating.

The article linked above is talking a little about spinoffs and a huge amazing finale. I'm not entirely sure which character would get a spinoff and if I'd even care. At this point, I feel like the best that the show could do as a finale is literally end with Merlin revealing his powers to Arthur and just leaving the audience up to launch a million fan fics about what happened afterwards.

I am hoping we actually get it just before the finale - ie Arthur has no time to freak out, Morgana is coming OH NOES etc. But I'm really tired of expecting to find Morgana entirely unsympathetic when I genuinely feel more for her than Arthur or Merlin at this point. The one scene where Merlin actually vaguely admitted he was responsible for Morgana (by not telling her she had a friend in Camelot back in season two) was cut from the final episode, so basically rasdjhasdlj. I'm sad it's over, but kind of glad because I just can't deal with this being stretched out more.

Merlin has consistently been that show I felt so badly about not being able to get attached to. I think I felt from the beginning that the Big Thing the show kept circling, the "Will Merlin reveal his magic to Arthur!?" question, was not going to actually go anywhere. It felt like hype, and worse, hype with no conclusion. Instead of feeling the humorous intent the show seemed to be trying to come across as about this, I just felt frustrated. Like, stop teasing about it and actually ANSWER some things.

That said, I feel badly for all those in the Merlin fandom who have been hit hard by this. I hope the finale is everything you want it to be, 'Scrib. :(
