Meme (The Icon One, Take Two)
I know I've done this one before, but I thought I'd do it again because...well, it's better than writing my response to my Theory II class readings for this week.

Anyway, did it because aelfgyfu_mead did it!

1. Reply to this post with "YELLOW CAR", and I will pick five of your icons.

2. Make a post (including the meme info) and talk about the icons I chose.

3. Other people can then comment to you and make their own posts.

4. This will create a never-ending cycle of icon glee.

This is a shot from one of my favorite films ever, Last Life in the Universe. The protagonist is Kenji (Tadanobu Asano), a Japanese expat now living in Thailand and working as a mild-mannered librarian. Kenji's apartment is compulsively ordered and on one side of his wall he has towers of neatly stacked books. But as this icon might suggest, there is more to Kenji than meets the eye. The blood splatter next to the books seemed to me a perfect depiction of how back when I was living in my other studio, I thought I'd be killed by my own towers of books that were all over the place.

This still is from an episode of Saiyuki. What you see is Bunny-sama, the stuffed rabbit of one of the show's antagonists, Dr. Nii Jenyi. Nii is literally a mad genius scientist who can probably think of six different ways of ending the world before lunch time. In his spare hours, he likes to sit around and converse with his colleagues through Bunny-sama. Yes, he literally holds up the toy to his face and talks in a high squeaky voice to them. So...the idea of a cute little stuffed bunny squeaking out "Hello, I bring you doom!" seemed plausible to me.

I'd been searching for awhile for a Good Omens icon seeing as how I post enough about the book. So I was extremely pleased to see magelight having made a few text-based ones. The scene this icon depicts is fairly inconsequential in the big scheme of the actual plot. But I loved the detail of Crowley reflexively torturing the poor ducks and groping for an appropriate idiom to share with Aziraphale even in the midst of the Apocalypse.

The creator of this icon is no longer on LJ, which is a shame. She was the creator of many a hilarious video that starred the cartoon version of Dr. Reid Oliver, played by Eric Sheffer Stevens. You see, last July I was going through what would be my last summer before entering into a Ph.D program. Perhaps I was starting to feel the panic of committing to something so....vast. Or maybe my brain was telling me that this was my last shot of getting involved with frivolous fandom or something. But whatever it was, I became obsessed with a storyline in the now canceled soap, As the World Turns. I'm not exactly proud, but I somehow saw one episode during a slow afternoon in my apartment that showed the burgeoning relationship between Luke Snyder and neurosurgeon Reid Oliver. It was cheesy, campy, and completely what one might expect in a soap. And dear readers, I was freaking HOOKED. I followed the entire storyline until its completion in August. And while the end wasn't what I'd hoped for, I'll always think fondly of Reid Oliver's obsession with sandwiches, Luke Snyder, and the joy of working with brains.

Hello, meet Dr. Nii Jenyi who was mentioned above as the owner of Bunny-sama. To expand a little on what I've already said about him, in the first anime series of Saiyuki, Nii was definitely more of a bit player antagonist. So you can imagine my surprise when I read the manga and found out he's basically the Big Bad behind...well, pretty much the entire thrust of the story. It was a revelation that didn't come out until the very end of the first manga series and when the big reveal happened, I realized that the bread crumbs had been all over the place, leading you back to Nii. And I'd just missed them all. Hence why the "Devil in the Details" phrase made so much sense to me in regards to this character. I'm not sure why I chose this one as my default icon but...well, yeah, I'll just leave that as is.

Eta: Any idea why this post didn't show up in my flist? Did you backdate it or is LJ being picky or something?

I backdated it. I'd forgotten about keeping it private!locked until many days later.

And to continue on with my LJ incompetence, I can't get my computer to upload the icons onto this comment so I'm going to be old school and tell you via keywords. Tech!Fail.
