Meme (Ah, Memes...)
From my meme guru, awanderingbard:

Give me the name of a character I write or have written, and I'll tell you:

- what's their favourite item of clothing/jewelry
- what do they do when they can't sleep
- what would they impulse buy at the grocery store
- what kind of comments did they get on their school report cards
- what’s their coffee order
- what sort of apps would they have on their smartphone
- how do they act around children
- what would they watch on tv when they’re bored and nothing they really like is on

OCs and AU versions are welcome as always.

Winnifred 'Winnie' Watson-Barnes

what's their favourite item of clothing/jewelry
Winnie has Joan's old NYU Med School sweatshirt which is her absolute favorite item of clothing to wear when she's in need of some down time. Joan gave it to her when Winnie was little and it reached her knees. She's held onto it and takes good care of it so that it's always available for her when she wants to wrap up in something warm and familiar.

what do they do when they can't sleep
When Winnie was a kid, she'd leave her room to see if anyone else was up. Usually if she was at her mom's she'd find Sherlock doing some sort of experiment and join him. As an adult, Winnie has taken to taking a late night run if she can't fall asleep. Joan and Bucky initially worried about a young woman running at such late hours until a mugger did once try to rob Winnie and she incapacitated him and held him down until the cops arrived.

what would they impulse buy at the grocery store
Chocolate chocolate chip ice cream. Winnie almost always can't finish a carton of it on her own before it gets freezer burn and yet she always gets the largest container available because at those moments she can believe that this time, she'll eat it all.

what kind of comments did they get on their school report cards
Winnie best subject in school was the sciences and her worst was history. She did well in science classes thanks to growing up around Joan and Sherlock who combined taught her some esoteric science facts. She did poorly in history, mainly because she always referenced either father, her Uncle Steve, or JJ in her papers rather than history books. She also used to get into some fights with fellow classmates during history lessons. Winnie's teachers always commended how smart and quick she was, but also felt a little apprehensive about how many fighting skills she had for a little kid.

what’s their coffee order
A bit of half and half and sugar. She likes her coffee more or less simple.

what sort of apps would they have on their smartphone
After experiencing J.A.R.V.I.S, Winnie's StarkPhone is pretty basic because she isn't too impressed with the random apps that are out there. However, she does have the Wikipedia app and the podcasts app. She can lose hours to both.

how do they act around children
As an adult, Winnie is great with kids. She grew up surrounded by so many of all ages relative to her that she's pretty comfortable around them. She often speaks to them like little adults (no condescension) but doesn't talk over them. When she went to medical school, people thought she'd likely go into pediatrics but she surprised some by choosing forensic pathology instead.

what would they watch on tv when they’re bored and nothing they really like is on
There's a channel Winnie gets where they broadcast old reruns of very old classic shows, marathon style (e.g. I Love Lucy, Perry Mason, Man from UNCLE). She and Bucky used to do marathon watches of these shows when she was growing up so it's a solid favorite place to go when nothing else is on.

Aww, all of this is great! I like Joan's sweatshirt, and Winnie's never-finished chocolate chip ice cream cartons. I picture JJ coming to her apartment to visit and going to the freezer, because he knows there will be some ice cream there that needs to be eaten.

Winnie best subject in school was the sciences and her worst was history.

JJ is the exact opposite, so they can be study buddies. I picture JJ ending up in art conversation as his profession, with a little side business of restoring books.

Thanks so much for doing this!

Thanks for the prompt! I'll get to Howard soon.

Winnie: Hey, I was going to finish that!
JJ: Really?
Winnie: ...No...

JJ: Really?
Winnie: ...No...

The Rogers and Barnes families seem like the sort that would walk into each other's houses and make themselves at home without asking. Which was probably annoying for Bucky when JJ went through that teenage boy phase of eating everything in sight.

Bucky: I thought I had a full jug of milk in here?
JJ: Um...
Bucky: Where's the pizza from last night?
JJ: Um...
Bucky: Are we out of bread?
JJ: Um...I made you a sandwich, too.
Bucky: What kind?
JJ: All of the kinds.
Bucky: *grins* Hey, that's my favourite. I'll eat it when I get back from the store.
JJ: You should probably get some cheese, too.
Bucky: Wilco.

I can definitely see this. I can also see a teenage Winnie arguing that her dad is way too protective and saying she's been having sleepovers with JJ since she was little as an argument she should be able to go to the movies with a boy.

Bucky: I know who JJ is. I know who his dad is. I've got nothing to worry about there.
Winnie: You know who Eliot's dad is!
Bucky: Exactly. You're not going.

I finally finished this!

Howard Stark and Dejeni

what's their favourite item of clothing/jewelry
Howard has a pocket watch that belonged to his father that he still has. He doesn't wear it often as he worries that he'll damage it beyond all repair (he's done several repairs on it over the years) so he had Dejeni store it away somewhere safe and always findable. They bring it out for special occasions only.

what do they do when they can't sleep
During the early years, he and Dejeni would build something or draw up some schematics they've had bouncing around in their heads. They each get a pencil and scribble furiously all night. Later on, they mostly drank when they couldn't sleep. Or rather, Howard drank and Dejeni would alternate between breaking things or scratching him.

what would they impulse buy at the grocery store
Anchovies. He eats them on bread. They were his mother's favorite item and she rarely got to eat then because back in the 20s as they were way too poor. However, when Howard's father would get a can, she'd always share some with her son. Once Howard got some money, he'd often buy them for her. Even though he could afford fancier prepared anchovies, like as a canape, he'd still just eat it as a sandwich. Howard loves them enough that even Dejeni will eat a few, despite her general dislike for eating anything.

what kind of comments did they get on their school report cards
Howard's report cards always noted his perfect attendance record as his father drilled into him that education was important and he had to show up. However, as time went on, it was obvious that even the teachers began to detest Howard being there every single day as after the sixth grade, it was clear he was smarter than any of his instructors. He was reprimanded constantly for talking back and correcting his teachers, making 'unhelpful disparaging comments about the day's lesson plan,' and behaving inappropriately with half his female classmates. Further, it was noted on several reports that Dejeni was often 'disruptive and demonstrated worrying impulsivity.'

what’s their coffee order
Black. Who do they think he is? French?

what sort of apps would they have on their smartphone
Smartphones did not exist back during Howard's day. But if he had a smartphone, he would only put apps on it that he himself created. Which would basically be one app that does everything.

how do they act around children
Around other people's kids, he's...okay. He talks to them a bit too much like they're adults and perhaps strays into topics that aren't the most appropriate for anyone under 13. With Tony, he was mixed. He loved that Tony was brilliant like him and could keep up with him better than anyone else. He didn't love that despite their shared brilliance, Howard didn't often know what Tony wanted from him half the time. Tomor would tell Dejeni repeatedly to tell Howard he just needed to be more encouraging and interested in Tony and Mim's day to day stuff. Dejeni would try to talk to Howard about this but they'd often get sidetracked.

what would they watch on tv when they’re bored and nothing they really like is on
In his older age, Howard would turn off the TV and just listen to some music. TV was jam packed with useless garbage media anyway.
The Writer They Call Tayawanderingbard on June 8th, 2015 02:57 am (UTC)
Yay! This is great. I really like the anchovies detail, that's really good headcanon. And the pocket watch, too.

Howard's school days sound exactly right. My Howard never actually went to high school, he dropped out to try to make some money instead because he figured it was a better use of his time.

Black. Who do they think he is? French?

This made me lol.

Hey, I was working on older!JJ, and I did this meme for him, so in case it's useful to you in your writing adventures:

JJ Rogers

what's their favourite item of clothing/jewelry: JJ has summer fedora and a winter fedora and he wears one of them about 90% of the time (but no, not indoors, Dad, geez). It's not a 1940's thing and it's not a hipster thing. It's just that Nora found a fedora in a thrift shop when JJ was little and she thought he might like it for when he was playing detectives with Winnie, and it turns out JJ really likes wearing a fedora and looks really good in a fedora, so he wears a fedora. Haters to the left.
what do they do when they can't sleep: Read a book, or put on old Bob Ross videos on youtube. Happy little trees are very relaxing, and give JJ happy little tree-painting dreams.
what would they impulse buy at the grocery store: The Pillsbury cookies you slice and bake. He hoards them in the freezer, and you will often find the holiday themed ones suddenly appearing long after the holiday is over. Pumpkins in December. Christmas Trees in March. Hearts in June.
what kind of comments did they get on their school report cards: JJ was a good all-around student, with extra abilities in history and art classes, and suffering a little in science and math classes. He was praised for his hard work, even in his weaker areas, and almost every report card commented on his helpfulness around the class in terms of picking up or volunteering to take things to other classrooms or helping other students. There were also many comments remarking on his tendency to get into fights on the playground, and his tendency to argue in history class. He eventually learned not to alter school textbooks, but could never stand to hear something reported 'wrong'. 'But my dad was alive then and he said' was, apparently, not a good enough reason to correct a teacher. Although they do tend to have trouble arguing when he corrects them about Steve himself, because, you know, fair enough.
what’s their coffee order: JJ prefers a good cup of hot chocolate, but if he needs the caffeine boost, he'll get a shot of espresso in there for a café mocha, or if he's at home, use his pod machine to make a cup of coffee and a cup of a hot chocolate and mix them together.
what sort of apps would they have on their smartphone: He has various apps that work with his hearing aid to boost function, like syncing with film and television audio, projecting subtitles on to the seat in front of him, or just simply boosting ambient noise so he can hear the person he's speaking to better. He also has an app that monitors his swimming and keeps track of laps and stroke length and heart rate and stuff.
how do they act around children: JJ gets right down on the floor and plays with kids. He's never too cool to throw a ball around or play hide and seek or even sit and have a tea party. He can be overprotective of children, and is the kind to step in if he needs bullying happening, even if he doesn't know any one involved.
what would they watch on tv when they’re bored and nothing they really like is on: JJ has never found a history documentary he didn't like. Hitler's Secret Army? Bring it on. The Howling Commandos? Oh, look, there's Dad's friends. 20th Century's Greatest Inventions? Hi, Tony's dad. The History channel is very well-loved at his place, though he still has a habit of correcting facts, even if he's the only person in the room. He recognizes artistic license, though, and won't correct works of fiction. Not until it's done, at least, and only to relate some 'fun facts'.

Oh, awesome!

I really like the detail of JJ watching Bob Ross videos and him wearing a fedora.

I'm also totally into JJ and Winnie being study buddies because they really would be able to help each other out with their weaker subjects. I can see the two of them trying to make learning fun for the other.

Winnie will absolutely be able to diagram the parts of the cell and explain how the nervous system works. But ask her what events led to the Vietnam War and she'll just scowl at you.

Thanks! I've been working on that and aging up the Stark children, which has been quite fun. Because daemons and stuff.

I like to think someone made a Bob Ross reference to Steve and he looked him up and got hooked on the videos, and he and JJ sometimes followed along on a lazy Sunday afternoon when Steve was in charge of him, with their little easels set up near each other.

JJ: *enthusiastically* There are two squirrels living in my tree.
Steve: That's great, buddy.

I'm still not quite sure what JJ does for a living, but I kind of like the idea of him writing and illustrating children's books with history themes. I bet he drew cute cartoons for Winnie to help her understand history better.

JJ: This is Tony's dad on D-day, he was helping coordinate stuff from England, and there were all these beaches here, these are the ones we were on.
Winnie: Why is everyone a duck?
JJ: I can't the hang of penguins.

Aw, adorable!

JJ: I can't the hang of penguins.

Haha!

I've decided that Winnie inherited the Barnes inability to draw worth anything so she'll just watch rather than attempt her own ducks. She's pretty good at coloring, though.

As a kid, I see her stalwartly saying that history is about 50% mistakes (her dad did NOT cause the Gulf War!) and bad reporting while science is solid fact so why should she learn something that's 50% mistakes.

Joan: There was a time when people thought bloodletting was a scientifically sound medical practice.
Winnie: *stubbornly* That's history of medicine so still history.

Steve probably draws colouring pages for her and JJ when they're little. I've decided that between the army pension and the money he gets from Tony copywriting his image for merchandise, Steve doesn't really have to work, so he just draws and volunteers at shelters. And hangs out at Nora's bookstore and drinks all her coffee until he works up the courage to ask her out.

JJ would respond that you can't be creative at all when there are definite answers. You're either right or wrong, what fun is that? Isn't fun when you can talk about it and learn different vides and argue your point. No one is right! Everyone is right! Except for that one teacher who said Dad was from Queens, that's just wrong. People should be more careful when they say things, and by the way, did you know that during rationing women drew stockings on their legs?

Joan: There was a time when people thought bloodletting was a scientifically sound medical practice.
Winnie: *stubbornly* That's history of medicine so still history.

Hehee!
