A+, John Oliver. A+
I rarely put up videos related to race relations, even though I do talk about it from time to time on my LJ. However, I felt like this video by John Oliver which comments on a US congressman mistaking US officials for Indian nationals was too good not to share. It's both so uncomfortable and hilarious.

"I am familiar with your country, I love your country." I sure hope so, Clawson. You are, after all, a congressman in that country.

I love Oliver's "Whoa, whoa, whoa. You do not get to pretend like that did not just happen!" I want that as a sound byte on my phone that I can play whenever I deal with faculty at my program.

Oh God, I got one minute in and I'm afraid to go forward. I have terrible second-hand embarrassment issues.

I'm subscribed to the Last Week Tonight youtube channel, and I love Jon Oliver. He takes a very British approach to making fun of the news that I enjoy in shows like Mock the Week and Have I Got News For You?. There should always be someone there to point out how ridiculous politics and the news are, as so many people take everything they're told without questioning it. If it's going to be awful either way, we might as well laugh at it.

Oh the second hand embarrassment is through the roof. But it's worth it for hearing Oliver's glee at the train wreck.

All right, I finished the clip. Not as bad as I was expecting! Kudos to the girl for being quite polite in her correction, especially considering he was not only being racist, but speaking so patronizingly to them.

American politics is so insane. I mean, we have Rob Ford and the Senate Scandal up here, but American politics wins at insanity.

I really enjoyed some of the comments people have been making in response to this gaff. The most hilariously sarcastic one being, "If your faces had just been white, we wouldn't be in this mess!"

"If your faces had just been white, we wouldn't be in this mess!"

That is painfully true.

In some ways, I could sort of see why you might think there would be Indian representatives, due to the nature of the hearing, but even that aside, the way he spoke to them was so like an adult to a child that it would be have been offensive even if his assumption was correct.

It really says something that I thought, "Well, at least he didn't raise his voice and slow down his speech while talking to them."
