Meme (The Fandom One)
Taken from somewhere off the internet:

1. Newest Fandom
The MCU universe. I'm still completely shocked that I'm now in this fandom. I'm doubly shocked that it was the Cap2 film that got me into it.

2. Oldest Fandom
Probably Good Omens. I've been a fan since before LJ and definitely before Tumblr. That's about as old as it gets right now.

3. Favorite Fandom
That's a tough question. While I'm not that active in it anymore, I think The Dresden Files (TV series) fandom remains my favorite. Mainly because I met some really wonderful people through it and it was my foray into being fannish on LJ.

4. Guilty Pleasure Fandom
Hemlock Grove. I'll be blunt, this Netflix show is awful. It makes almost no sense, the acting is questionable, the writing of female characters rivals Moffat at his worst when writing for Sherlock. And yet for whatever reason, I've binged watched both seasons. I read the novel by Brian McGreevy who is actively involved in the TV series and I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing. The first season followed the plot of the novel to almost the letter. The novel was okay in my opinion. I liked the idea of a town where all these monster types from old horror stories (werewolf, vampire, Frankenstein) were all popping up. But somehow on screen it was kind of terrible. I knew as I was watching it that it was bad but I was rather invested in the intense friendship between Roman and Peter. Apparently friendships between vampires and werewolves is just a thing I have now or something. Yeah, maybe I can blame the loss of Being Human for why I kept going with season 2. And if I thought season 1 was bad? OH MAN. Season 2 is like 10 episodes of WTF. I could write a 20 page paper on why season 2 alone features the worst use of a female character in possibly the history of media with every trope being hit (it was really that bad). And yet I just know if there's a season 3 I'll be there. I can't point to anything redeeming in the series. I just watch it. Guiltily.

5. OTP
I think the only OTP I have right now that's canon is Cecil and Carlos. Man, I love how uncomplicated their feelings for each other are. It's just the reality shaped around them that's completely complicated.

6. OT3
Hmmm...don't think I have one.

7. Worst Pairing Ever
Canon-wise? I hated the pairing between Mitchell and Lucy Jaggart from Being Human. The Mitchell/Annie one was pretty awful too. In fact, just about every pairing Mitchell got was horrendous. I think it was partly the point that Mitchell couldn't do a relationship given how messed up he was but it was awful as a viewer to have to watch these relationships crash because it was a season long crash.

8. Wankiest Fandom
Sigh. Probably the Night Vale fandom if you went on Tumblr.

9. I'd Like to Find a Fandom For
There is, I think, a very tiny fandom for David Mitchell's Cloud Atlas. I wish it was larger and that it had more stories.

10. I Wouldn't Touch This Fandom
It's hard to top what the Night Vale fandom looks like on Tumblr so I feel like I've already been exposed to the worst. But if I had to pick another one, I'll never get into the Teen Wolf fandom even as I do watch the show.

11. Any Literary Fandoms
Just Cloud Atlas I think.

12. Any Bandoms
Nope

13. Any Gamer Fandoms
Ditto

14. I Miss This Fandom
I do miss The Dresden Files fandom. I used to be so active in it but I'm pretty sure it's sort of died out by now.

15. I'm Glad This Fandom Is Gone
Other than The Dresden Files, I think most of the fandoms I once belonged to are still going. And if any of them vanished, I think I'd be kind of sad. Even the Night Vale one. Mainly because I don't think it's Night Vale's fault but rather just Tumblr being combined with this particular fannish thing.

...ahahah your 'review' of Hemlock Grove made me almost want to watch the show for the WTF-ery. And I would totally read that 20-page paper on the female character XD

This puts it so (if you'll pardon the term) perfectly *sighs happily*

I'm honestly torn between telling you to watch it and wanting to spare you the 23 hours you'd spend going through both seasons. I want someone on my flist to be appalled with me. Strangely, I don't hate-watch it though. It's more like I confused-watch it because I keep hitting the button for the next episode rather than walking away.

And I would totally read that 20-page paper on the female character XD

I might do an entry on her. There's so much about what happened to her in the show but also fans reaction to her as the season went on that I found really fascinating. Even as I wanted to kick Eli Roth and Brian McGreevy in the teeth for creating her in the first place.

This puts it so (if you'll pardon the term) perfectly *sighs happily*

The new Night Vale is out!

Does Hemlock Grove feature one of the Skarsgard brothers? I think my housemate watched the first season a while ago, one day when she was out sick from work. I seem to remember hearing a rant from her about it though I can't recall the content now...am really curious about this female character, though, what cliches did they hit?

And I just listened to the latest ep! After so long with the Strex plot it's odd to be back to business as usual...awful and terrible and ridiculous business as it is!

Yes, it stars Bill Skarsgard who plays Roman (the vampire). He and Alexander Skarsgard can swap notes about how to play the undead.

am really curious about this female character, though, what cliches did they hit?

In season 1, we had the Madonna/Whore trope, the Manic Dream Pixie Girl trope (sort of), the Sexually Repressed Female Be Crazy trope, Dead Lesbians trope, and Slut Shaming. The latter isn't really a trope but season 1 was pretty much one long Slut Shaming.

In season 2, we got the Madonna/Whore, Slut Shaming, Manic Dream Pixie Girl all rolled up in one with the main female character. If that wasn't annoying enough, her role in the story in terms of plot was kind of awful. It was like she was literally the middle man so that Roman and Peter could advance their relationship.

Hmm...so I might indeed write a long review about this show later.

After so long with the Strex plot it's odd to be back to business as usual...awful and terrible and ridiculous business as it is!

Even Cecil's voice sounded like it was back to being that tranquil cadence that I love so much. I'm glad he isn't sitting around completely depressed about Carlos' situation. This is where his insane optimism that has no basis in reality really comes in handy.

Ahahah that sounds like quite the amazing female character...I'll have to ask the housemate if she ever saw s2! (maybe I can find summaries of the show or somesuch...after enduring 3 seasons of Teen Wolf I'm not sure I can take actually watching another one...!)

Yes, though I did love his insistent reminder that his boyfriend is a hero! Aww, Cecil. He seemed maybe to be trying to convince himself (also aww that the town is apparently fretting about Carlos, or about Cecil losing him. I love how a lot of the people of Night Vale apparently react to Cecil's show the same way we the real audience does XD) But it was good to hear Cecil back to sounding like himself. And reporting on things he couldn't possibly know about (is he actually omniscient? Or does the whole town just compulsively text him things? Like, were the SSP texting him about not having enough for lunch?!)

S2 came out four days ago. It took me two days to power through it all. It almost feels like watching the show is like taking bitter tasting medicine: just do it all at once.

after enduring 3 seasons of Teen Wolf I'm not sure I can take actually watching another one...!

Oh man, Teen Wolf. Yeah, I still watch it. I won't touch the fandom but I still watch it. That show is actually a bit better than Hemlock Grove. At least the acting is better. That's right. Teen Wolf has better acting.

(is he actually omniscient? Or does the whole town just compulsively text him things? Like, were the SSP texting him about not having enough for lunch?!

Maybe Cecil has one of those police frequency radio things. Because I'm sure the SSP talk on it all the time about their lunches.
X-parrotxparrot on July 15th, 2014 11:51 pm (UTC)
...worse than Teen Wolf??? Oh man that might be worth watching XD

Cecil having a CB radio tuned to the SSP frequency would explain a lot, actually, given that the SSP listen to all conversations!

...worse than Teen Wolf??? Oh man that might be worth watching XD

I'm pretty sure Bill Skarsgard's acting got worse from season 1 to 2. How does that even happen??

I wish the bad acting made the show more entertaining but it made it more painful. I'd say Famke Jenssen was probably the best one. Although the competition wasn't exactly fierce.

The Dresden Files fandom was seriously the loveliest fandom I have encountered, and since it was my first online fandom, it was both a good, gentle way for me to enter the world of fandom, and set me up for being a bit shell-shocked by the ones I would encounter later on. I never saw a single bit of wank on there.
formerly lifeinsomniacjoonscribble on July 15th, 2014 06:29 pm (UTC)
Word. The Dresden Files fandom was so free of all drama. Even between fans of the books and fans of the show, there weren't any wars or hate. It was like a perfectly tranquil community. Even if people didn't agree it was so civilized.

Yes.

Sadly, Mitchell's friendship with George might have been the healthiest ship he ever got. And even that was hardly healthy half the time.

I came late to The Dresden Files - I discovered in Dec 2007 thanks to a Torchwood crossover by donutsweeper. By March 2008 I had the dvds but it wasn't until June 2008 that I wrote my own DF crossover. I didn't really become involved in the fandom while it was still active, and I think that's a real shame. Sounds like it was just my sort of place.

I've 'met' some great people thanks to DF though :)

and I think that's a real shame. Sounds like it was just my sort of place.

The great thing about the DF fandom was that the only requirement was that you like DF. Beyond that, it was for everyone. It was more welcoming and accepting than any other fandom I'd ever encountered before or since.
