CATWS Daemons
Behold what happens when I geek/procrastinate all over the place.

I've only done three characters who appear in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Mainly because awanderingbard already has excellent daemons for Steve and Natasha and I can't improve on perfection. And I also need more time to hunt down proper images for the rest in my mind. I had rather a lot of fun imaging what this film would look like if all the characters did indeed have their daemons with them. And by fun I also mean it got angsty and sad in parts.

Bucky Barnes/The Winter Soldier
Shessida ('Shess') originally settled as a American black bear. After HYDRA created the Winter Soldier, Shessida went back to altering her shape, mainly depending on situations. Shessida favored the forms of the komodo dragon, Bengal tiger, wolverine, black panther, and particularly the Northern goshawk when out on the field. When at a HYDRA base getting repaired, reporting in or for when it came time to be frozen again, she usually coiled up as a corn snake. In my head, once Steve finds Bucky again and helps him (because he will!), Shessida will eventually settle to a sun bear. Sun bears are about half the size of black bears and are reclusive, preferring to spend most of their time tucked away in trees. They can get vicious though when approached and are generally considered the most aggressive bears compared to black or grizzly bears.

Sam Wilson
Alette ('Letty') is a slender mongoose. Slender mongooses are not that territorial but maintain stable den areas that they share with members of related species. They are also small enough that I imagine Sam being able to secure her against him when they fly. Originally I thought to give Sam a daemon that could fly but felt like that actually made the issue of how she can stay close to Sam when he flies more difficult. If he's zipping around on his wings, it'll be simpler to have her secured to him. So land animal it was.

Alexander Pierce
Nyris is a golden eagle. Golden eagle are excellent predators, adaptable and have a range of hunting skills. Any animal of a reasonable size is prey for a golden eagle. Fun fact which I learned while researching: there was one reported incident of a golden eagle taking away a black bear cub. Golden eagles are no joke. I originally thought Pierce should be some type of wolf but Robert Redford would look way more regal with an eagle perched on his shoulder all the time.

Aww! I can totally see Issie bounding around Shess' feet and Shess carrying her to safety. Very nice choices, as far as I know about the characters. I like your names, too. Names are usually the hardest part for me, but I'm a bit obsessed with them being relevant to the character in meaning.

Yes, I might have had one or seven scenarios like this. And Shess trying to use her bulk to try and keep Issie from doing something stupid. "Would you just STAY DOWN?!"

I didn't do much research into the names but kind of stared at the animals until something popped up in my head that didn't sound too ludicrous.

And Issie barking and growling over Shess's shoulder as she's forcibly carried away.

"I had him on the ropes!"

Name etymology is one of those things I'm a total geek about, so I imagine I put much more research into names than any sane person does. Part of what took so long to name Alec and Molly's hypothetical children was that the name I really liked didn't have a nice meaning and I had to force myself to go 'it doesn't really matter'.

I tend to do names based more on how they sound and if I can hear the other characters saying the name. So many a time have I sat in front of my laptop mentally sounding out names in the voices of various actors.

And Issie barking and growling over Shess's shoulder as she's forcibly carried away.

Of course I went completely angsty and had an image of Issie calling after Shess when she flies away in her gohawk form, oblivious.

Oh, yeah, that makes sense. I have certain characters who name themselves, and when I name 'normal' people, they tend to be more synesthesia-based (does the colour of the name match the colour of the character?), but when I do fantasy names, when I can go really out there, I like to use names with meanings.

Awww. :-(

Daemons interaction is something I love to play around with, because you can show a lot about how people feel about one another by how their daemons move around each other. Like licking each other's wounds, or having their fur all up on end, or circling one another or nose bumping. It's just a cool other layer of subtext that I find very fun.

Gotta do something to balance out my earlier explosion of hearts and rainbows thanks to your fic.

Oh, yes! This is definitely one of the highlights of what I remember from the Pullman books. Particularly the way Lord Asriel and Mrs. Coulter's daemons interacted with each other when you first saw them together.

When I have a bit more time, I really need to refresh myself on how the daemons thing works so I can actually write a proper fic in this 'verse.

Give in! Come to the light side. We have puppies!

And you went 'aw crap, that ain't good'.

I think I get inspired a lot by the posts on tumblr about odd animal friendships. I can sort of see two daemons being buds when I see that.

I'm sure I have within me some sort of fic where Issie keeps talking to Shess who in her new sun bear form is hidden up in a shelf somewhere. Eventually she comes down to join Issie while Steve and Bucky watch a movie together a few feet away.

I saw a gif of a horse grooming a small cat which totally made me think "Aw...these must be daemons of BFFs."

Eee! Yes. Baby steps. You can do it.

I do have some fluffy fics running around my brain. Some even made it partially onto my laptop!

Usually when I enter newish fandoms, though, I like to default to my comfort zone of angst. Still, Issie's adorableness seems to demand fluffy fics.

Huzzah!

Yeah, I get that. I usually start with hurt/comfort or kid!fic.

Still, Issie's adorableness seems to demand fluffy fics.

I fee like Issie is totally not pleased about being adorable, because she is fierce, damnit. I mean, nice, of course, but totally fierce.

Teehee! Awww! I'd pet her but you know, that would be an abomination.

As I've inspired you to write about Tony, Steve and pens, you've inspired me to start typing out Issie and Shess post-CATWS. I'd shake my fist but cute animal interactions is my secret weak spot.

Boo-yah!

I'd shake my fist but cute animal interactions is my secret weak spot.

I shall remember that for the future.

Ooh, ooh! Can you do Natasha?

I love what you've done with the others, especially Bucky.
formerly lifeinsomniacjoonscribble on June 1st, 2014 07:13 pm (UTC)
Thanks! I had great fun with these. It helps that I also enjoy staring at images of cute animals.

I would do Natasha but awanderingbard has already done her daemon which in my mind is perfect. He's a rainbow boa! Beautiful, mesmerizing scales. Able to kill with his entire body.
