The Dangers of Geeking at Night
awanderingbard and I did a lot of random geeking out about the MCU until we eventually got onto a discussion about what everyone's daemons would be. She's compiled a truly excellent list which I've more or less taken on as my own headcanon if I were ever to write a daemons AU in this fandom. Then of course my brain decided to apply this to the latest Captain America movie.

SPOILERS below for who appears in the film and some plot stuff.

I might have spent many hours looking up animals for Maria Hill, Sam Wilson, and Alexander Pierce. I'll get back to you about those because I'm still a little undecided. I imagine Pierce's animal to be a species of wolf, though. Sam's would have to be a bird but what sort I'm still debating.

In our geeking, it was brought up that a person's daemon might change post-settling following a traumatic event. I imagined that Bucky Barnes original daemon would be something large because that just seems like Bucky. Plus, I had images of his daemon being able to easily pick up Steve's (I've completely adopted the idea of it being the terrier from the list above) when Steve was still little. My current headcanon is that as the Winter Soldier, Bucky's daemon has gone back to shifting forms. Maybe not as frequently as they do when children but it's no longer settled into one form permanently. Actually, Zola probably took this to be a beneficial side effect to the experiments/brainwashing/mindwiping they put Bucky through. But I'd like to think that even as his daemon has now gone back to changing forms, there's still a common thread between all the animals the daemon chooses to turn into. I'm not sure what that is yet since at some point I had to go to sleep and today I have some dissertationing to do. But I guess I know what I'll be doing during my breaks.

I'm sorry! I didn't mean to do this. Daemons are very time consuming, I should have been more careful.

Maria Hill is the only character there that I'm familiar with, except for pre-Winter Soldier Bucky. She hasn't had much personality in what I've seen of her, so I can't really decide what she'd be like, animal-wise, but maybe something in the canid family? A crab-eating fox forms teams to hunt, which seems similar to her job at SHIELD.

And I like your headcanon for Bucky! If he's been so memory-wiped and brain washed that he doesn't have a personality anymore, I can definitely see his daemon being confused as to what it should be.

I think along with Naming Guru you definitely have a career as Daemon Selector. The crab-eating fox is kind of perfect for Maria.

But I want to have useful skills! Though, if someone would pay me to find daemons or names, I would be very pleased. Discounts for naming daemons!

The trick is to Google 'animals that___' (build things/use tools/live in packs/carry their young) or 'unusual mammals/birds/lizards' or 'weird animal ____' (hunting techniques/habits/mating rituals). There are a lot of lists out there, and once you find a species, you can go to Wiki and look at the taxonomy section and find the best subspecies.

Daemons can also be extinct or mythological creatures, too, so if you want to give someone a unicorn or phoenix or dodo, you can totally do that.

Yeah, I've got a running list of animals Bucky's daemon probably turns into post-Winter Soldier. I won't detail what I googled for in terms of animal characteristics to start this list. It's so damn upsetting.

There's something kind of sad about someone's daemon settling into an extinct animal. I mean, the mythical ones suggest a kind of whimsy about the person but one that's already dead?

I suppose it's unique? You'd probably the only one who has it. Maybe a sign of someone who doesn't feel they fit in. A dying breed.

See? Sad.

...Although now I'm sort of imagining Tony having a mythical daemon that started out as something ostentatious and unique but then later it became obvious it was more lonely and isolated. Man, this world is like a black hole.

Man, this world is like a black hole.

Yep. Every once in a while I get a real surge of obsession with it, and then I go along happily for awhile doing other things. So, there's hope! Hang in there.

Welp, I now have a list of animals and some names but no fic as of now. I'm sort of having fun though imaging what the film would look like though with everyone having daemons.

I like making my daemon portraits for that reason. I like seeing what everyone would look like with these animals hanging around them. I have such vivid headcanon for how Tzo sways and tweets along to Sherlock's violin playing, or how Subira always sleeps on John's stomach, or how Irene's bird is pretty much constantly in his mating feathers whenever she's trying to get Sherlock to notice her. It adds a great new dimension to everyone, which I really love.

I'm slowly putting together a post with some characters from Cap 2 and their daemons. I've completely accepted your Steve and Tash daemons, though. The only one I think I changed based on what I've seen of him is Fury's.
The Writer They Call Tayawanderingbard on June 1st, 2014 12:46 am (UTC)
That's totally cool. I don't know much about Fury, I just went on the fact that he's always in black and sort of slinks out of nowhere all mysterious to make you join his club. Multiple headcanons are totes okay.

I made Fury's daemon a barred owl. I seem to favor daemons that can fly. Or are predators. Or both.
The Writer They Call Tayawanderingbard on June 1st, 2014 01:36 am (UTC)
Yep, pretty much all my daemons are birds or mammals. It's only Mrs Holmes and Tash that have reptiles. I think they have more personality than say a fish or a frog, from a human point of view.

Fury needs a predator daemon—that much seems clear.

Seconded!

I didn't even know crab-eating foxes existed!

I can see the Winter Soldier's changing, especially as he gets free of HYDRA. Would that be stressful to Bucky as a human being? I haven't actually read the books yet.

From what I recall of the books, no. Daemons are supposed to be the externalized form of people's souls and their personality. They settle into one form around puberty but until then they shift around a lot which is considered normal.
