One of These Vids Is Not Like the Other
There are two new shows that are coming to ABC that star Asian American actors in lead roles. One show, in fact, stars an entire Asian American cast.

My Chinese-American friend and I watched the trailer for Fresh Off the Boat together. Yes, it uses stereotypes (it's a sitcom, come on) but it does it rather well and doesn't degrade Asians for the sake of humor. My friend commented that the stuff about the food was scarily accurate for her experience growing up in the Midwest. I'll definitely give this one a try.

The second one stars John Cho as the main male lead opposite Karen Gillen doing a pretty solid American accent. Okay, I adore John Cho and for that alone I'll probably give this at least two episodes. But Selfie which is a modern twist on My Fair Lady/Pygmalion looks pretty terrible. You can view the trailer here and cringe along. Still, because the main male lead is played by an Asian American actor I kind of want the show to succeed. Or better yet, be good and succeed.

And finally just because I'm still loving the entire cast of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, check out the brothers Evans on the Tonight Show playing games. Special cameo by Mother Evans. As an aside, Chris Evans should maybe rethink his anti-anxiety meds dosages. Just saying.

Mom Evans is bad ass. And laughs just like him, which is cute. But Chris does seem a bit out of it, poor fellow. Especially since he's usually so animated. I don't know, is he on something for anxiety that he's just started and hasn't adjusted to yet (I went from 30mg to 60mg of Paxil once, I was baked until I evened out) or does he take a Valium or something fast acting?

No trailers for me! I am once again the evil Canadian trying usurp sponsorship dollars.

I love how Mama Evans completely owns the fact she ruled the house like a general.

You can probably google and successfully find Canadian friendly trailers for both shows. So yeah! Stop trying to usurp poor penniless sponsors, you Canadian fiend!

And she has two very nice boys, it seems, as a result. My mum and I were talking the other day (and by talking, I mean 'me generally nattering at her') about how celebs with very strong family roots seem to be the ones who don't completely collapse under the Hollywood glitz. I guess because they have someone there going 'heh, you're not that special'.

So yeah! Stop trying to usurp poor penniless sponsors, you Canadian fiend!

I'll have you know we zamboni ice rinks in compensation for being allowed to watch American media, eh.

Speaking of Canadian stuff, tou.tv has Series Three of Sherlock up in French now. I put on 'Le Signe de Trois' right away, but I haven't seen all of it yet. I haven't got to French!Drunk!Sherlock. But for some reason Sherlock folding napkins is funnier in French. Mostly because the translation of 'so, that happened' uses a word that would best translate as 'that made itself happen without my involvement'. I admire French!Sherlock's ability to match Cumberbatch's speed of speech. Even the closed captioning was having trouble keeping up.

I don't think I can watch either of those sitcoms. Neither made me laugh—but at least Fresh Off the Boat didn't make me want to hide. I cannot watch Selfie, which is too bad, given the cast.

Those brothers—my gosh, can you imagine raising them?

Am I the only one who thinks that Chris Evans with a beard looks a little disconcertingly like Josh Gomez?

I'm sticking to my rule of giving any show with Asian American actors at least two episodes. Although I may need some alcohol to get through Selfie.

I can sort of see it. Although I more see him looking like a younger Jason Lee with the beard.

Please let me know if it improves. And BH and I did note, having watched that trailer right after the trailer for Gracepoint (the US version of Broadchurch), that Karen Gillan does a more credible American accent than David Tennant does.

Now that I've realized who a bearded Chris Evans reminds me of, I can cope with the cognitive dissonance that I've been experiencing seeing him in interviews! I've been expecting a different voice to come out of his mouth, but I couldn't work out whose!

I somehow had a feeling that Tennant's American accent wouldn't be stellar.
