Pictures from Sherlock, Series 3
Thanks for these Buzzfeed.

I'm particularly interested in #14 given the great AU-verse awanderingbard has been writing regarding Molly's love life.

Oh, man. I so dread and look forward to this series. I really do.

Can I just say, I would totally support the speculation on #13 if it's true and well-written. And I swear to God if 14 is evil some way, I will flip some fucking tables. Let him be a nice young man, let Sherlock be jealous of him if need be, let him simply be he wrong man for her, but let him be a nice young man. Acutally, apply all that to Mary, too. She is NOT to be evil.

Still, nice to see Molly as part if the main cast. We've never had promos of her before. I hope that bodes well.

and well-written.

And there's the rub. This show has never done a good job with depicting romantic relationships and Molly tends to get a pretty poor treatment depending on who's writing her. I don't want them to do #13 because of this at all as I fear it'll turn into some sort of joke.

Let him be a nice young man, let Sherlock be jealous of him if need be, let him simply be he wrong man for her, but let him be a nice young man.

Seriously. Can something NICE happen to Molly for once? Like, normal nice? Not "Sherlock was initially a supreme jerk to her and is now being less a jerk so that's nice" nice?

I like the Molly/Sherlock ship, and I would totally write fanfic if I was brave enough, and thought it would work. But I don't think Sherlock needs a love interest, and I don't want him using her by dating her. If it were something grown from him relying on her while he's been away and coming to realize her values, I think it could work. But not if it's just him turning to her because John isn't paying attention to him. Or her wearing him down until he consents. He'd have to be the initiator for me to believe it.

I hope he's a nice geeky hospital worker who thinks she's amazing. I mean, just going by appearance, that's the type of character I'm guessing he'll be.

Maybe he's a nice, geeky primary teacher. :)

But then I feel like Cumberbatch needs to bring over some posh wine to Hiddleston down the road to negotiate an extremely low fee guest appearance/recasting.

Hee! Thank you!

I'm trying to decide whether I want to try to get my AUs to a sort of okay to leave place before Series Three starts, or if I can continue merrily on my way and try to incorporate what events I can into them. My Christmas fic leaves everyone in a nice spot, but I do have more plans.

I feel like my last Trio fic left everyone in a good place, too. But that, at least, I have a little more leeway in. It's not as though Q's lack of existence has been a problem so far. But John and Molly being in entirely the wrong relationships might pose a problem.

I'm afraid whatever they do on the show will pale by comparison to Alec!

I'm with you: John's love interest and Molly's possible love interest should not be bad. Ever again.
The Writer They Call Tayawanderingbard on December 7th, 2013 03:32 am (UTC)
I don't know if that's a good thing or not!

Maybe I should keep Alec on standby as some sort of comfort if things go wrong?

My genuine worst fear is an evil Mary. I don't want the fans to have that justification for not liking her, and I don't want another evil woman. I just want a nice lady who genuinely loves John, no strings attached.

I'm not hopeful.
formerly lifeinsomniacjoonscribble on December 7th, 2013 03:39 am (UTC)
I'm actually more concerned they're going to Mary Sue up Mary Morstan and she'll fall into that category of the female character who is all tropes and no actual character. But...that might be better than her being evil?
The Writer They Call Tayawanderingbard on December 7th, 2013 03:52 am (UTC)
For me, it would be. I can deal with too much to like about her, but not if she's evil. Or being forced to work for evil. We don't need anymore pawns either.
formerly lifeinsomniacjoonscribble on December 7th, 2013 03:54 am (UTC)
I guess I'd have to see why she's evil before I make a call on that one. Being pawns of evil is a no for me. Particularly after the whole Irene Adler debacle. But Mary herself being some sort of super villain would be...bizarre but possibly preferable. Then again, I'm overall hold a very low hope that she will be anything but slightly flat in terms of characterization. I just cross fingers that it won't be offensive.
The Writer They Call Tayawanderingbard on December 7th, 2013 04:01 am (UTC)
I just don't think John needs another betrayal like that. I'm a romantic; I just want him happy. I want fluff. I mean, I know it's going to break my heart, because it's Sherlock, but let me have a little fluff first.
formerly lifeinsomniacjoonscribble on December 7th, 2013 04:02 am (UTC)
Well you know me and my wrecking ball that is ANGST and PAIN. But John's had a rough year. He does deserve some down time before hell breaks loose all over again.
The Writer They Call Tayawanderingbard on December 7th, 2013 04:09 am (UTC)
I figured that was the angle you were coming from, oh Great Angster. But I, the Great Cuddly One, desire some happiness.
formerly lifeinsomniacjoonscribble on December 7th, 2013 04:10 am (UTC)
Yes, despite my inability to give John anything happy in any of my fics, I do think he deserves some happiness so I'll leave it to you and hopefully the show.
The Writer They Call Tayawanderingbard on December 7th, 2013 04:16 am (UTC)
You can count on me, at least! I will always be here to write pointless fluff with children and cute love interests.

Speaking of which, I was watching Vicar of Dibley tonight, and it occurred to me that Alec might just be Molly's Harry Jasper Kennedy, right down to the reading glasses and questionable knitwear.

OMG so true! Not to mention his infinite patience with occasionally annoying persons.

And unabashed adoration for his woman of choice, who he knew he was going to end up with from the moment they met. And the height difference. And the age difference, though much less in Alec and Molly's case. I didn't even mean to, but the parallels are very strong.
formerly lifeinsomniacjoonscribble on December 7th, 2013 04:22 am (UTC)
Is this why I melted like butter when watching/reading both couples?
The Writer They Call Tayawanderingbard on December 7th, 2013 04:29 am (UTC)
Hee! I don't know, maybe? I'm glad you have that reaction, though. It makes me pleased.

I do love Harry, and his complete adoration for Geraldine. I love how they wrote him. I love that they didn't feel the need to justify it in any way, and just trusted us to accept that he could fall in love with an older, strong, not very tiny woman with crazy friends. I think that's maybe what I was thinking about with Alec. Just him adoring Molly, whether or not she might be considered awkward, or mousy, or shy.

YES.

I once wrote a fic that featured two characters in love where the woman wasn't conventionally pretty or sexy in behavior. When a friend asked the guy what he saw in her, he replied with, "I see her." And that sort of ended the talk.

This is to say, as much as I tend not to write romance fluff fic, I like it when well-written characters can be in love with each other because they are simply in love with that person. It doesn't really matter that much what's expected or what's considered the obvious characteristics one falls in love with.
The Writer They Call Tayawanderingbard on December 7th, 2013 04:42 am (UTC)
I have so many issues with the way most relationships are written on screen or in books, and I try really hard to make my relationships strong and realistic and equal.

So, Molly is sweet and smart and a little bit odd and Alec loves her. Period. No justification required.

I think that's why I like Martin and Theresa in Cabin Pressure, too. Martin is a wreck, and Theresa just digs him anyway.

Also, you could totally write fluffy fic. That sounds like a lovely story, and you should write happy things sometimes.

I'm so happy John Finnemore gave Martin this. He's dating a princess and he might get paid to fly planes!

I try but they tend to just get stuck. I was writing that Lestrade/Murphy fic but it somehow veered toward angst (Thanks a lot, Anna and Harry) rather than staying on track with how nice it is that they're both dating each other who are both lovely.

At least we can count on Finnemore to give us some happy. Hopefully. I'm trying out some Martin/Theresa for a Christmas fic, and they are actually being super cute. Except Theresa is a bit evil, like Douglas evil, and I'm not sure where that came from. I'm just rolling with it.

I try but they tend to just get stuck.

Reading my comment back I realized it sounded slightly despotic. You know, follow your heart and stuff. *thumb's up* I believe you, but write what you want.

I have that happen with Harry Watson in my Abby verse. I find if you stick enough fluff around it, it doesn't hurt as much. I always find it's best to roll with the characters if they want you to do something.

Douglas evil is great brand of evil.

I find if you stick enough fluff around it, it doesn't hurt as much.

I got this hilarious image of sticking a bunch of cotton balls around the spikes of a mace ball in futile hopes of making it hurt less.
The Writer They Call Tayawanderingbard on December 7th, 2013 05:08 am (UTC)
I wonder if that's why Martin can handle her? Because people aren't his forte, but he's at least used to taking the path of least resistance. But in this case, Theresa is working for his benefit, and not necessarily against him.

Ha! I had an image of candy floss, myself.

I am hopeful! I have some hope that they cast Amanda Abbington to get genuine chemistry, and I hope she will be around a while.
The Writer They Call Tayawanderingbard on December 7th, 2013 04:08 am (UTC)
I do like Amanda, and that's a good point. I think it's good that we're coming into Episode One with her and John already dating, which is at least more than the original book gave us. I hope they're doing that to give us a real relationship, and not a token Love Interest.
