RL vs. FL
Even though I somehow feel less busy, I realize my free time is significantly less this year than any other year now that I have a full patient load, a clinical fellowship, and am doing dissertation work. And now I've taken on a testing case so those precious few hours I had are now gone, gone, gone.

So it was a really bad time for me to be bitten by a plot bunny. A Night Vale plot bunny at that which means it has three eyes and four ears...and maybe glows in the dark.

The plot bunny came in the form of a first sentence which is, "The week Carlos goes to California for a research conference, Night Vale disappears from the face of reality."

I had ideas of Carlos, after being in Night Vale for a year is getting a little tired of how nothing in the damn town follows the laws of physics or general rules of science. Sure, it's interesting and fun at times but it wears on a person who hasn't lived there his entire life. Plus, he hasn't published a damn paper in over a year because how is he going to explain floating cats? He probably has a mild argument with Cecil about how stir crazy he's getting so he ends up going to the conference alone. And soon after Night Vale just vanishes. No records, no memories from anyone it ever existed, other than Carlos. It's like the whole of reality adjusted itself to neatly snip Night Vale out.

Because angst and characters having to suffer are the shiniest tools in my wheelhouse, Carlos would be slightly frantic and trying to find some sort of solid evidence that he hadn't hallucinated the entire last year and Cecil. I have a vague idea of why Night Vale vanished and how it'll...un-vanish. But I need more time in my RL. If Wednesdays get cancelled, can Fridays be accidentally get scheduled in twice?

It was either Gaiman or Prachett who came up with the idea that people should be able to give away the free time they aren't using and giving it to people who need more time to accomplish things. I think it might have been Gaiman. It was on The Museum of Curiosity, but they've both been guests, so I'm not sure.

In any case, I don't get much accomplished on Fridays, you're welcome to borrow a couple of hours if you need them. I'll probably just be pinning things, and the universe could use a little less of my doing that.

Man. Can this please be a real thing??

Maybe if we believe hard enough? Though, I hear the the universe is really strict about the laws of physics. Like, you can't even bend them a little, and you don't get any slaps on the wrist.

Ironically, if you live in Night Vale, you are exempt from the laws of physics on various scheduled days.

That's very convenient! We should all get a few days a year where we could choose not to follow the laws of physics and have a nice break.

I never realised I need to read that until now!
formerly lifeinsomniacjoonscribble on October 26th, 2013 05:43 pm (UTC)
I really, really want to write it. If anything because I really want Carlos to try and explain Night Vale to normal folk.

And everyone would look at him pityingly, thinking that he's finally lost it, and even he's starting to think he's finally lost it before he over hears this other scientist (who everyone always thought was really weird and tend to be wary of at conferences) talking about how much he/she misses Big Ricco's (or something that screams Night Vale) and he just goes "Phew! I'm not crazy!! And Cecil is real!"

Um... yeah. Or something. :P
formerly lifeinsomniacjoonscribble on October 26th, 2013 06:22 pm (UTC)
"Phew! I'm not crazy!! And Cecil is real!"

I have this funny/sad image of Carlos driving aimlessly around the desert being all, "I know Night Vale is around here somewhere!" while trying to tune his car radio to pick up the NVCR broadcasts.
in_the_bottle: ASH Hee!in_the_bottle on October 26th, 2013 06:32 pm (UTC)
Aww... and then Cecil's getting traffic reports at the station about it, but he couldn't do anything since they can't leave during whatever it was that was going on until its over and as he gets the reports of what's going on, he's all "Oh, my beloved Carlos, I'm here! I'm here!! You're not going crazy! Damn this (event of choice)!" And gets all sad about missing his Carlos.

Am I feeding your bunny? :P

Am I feeding your bunny? :P

Yes, dammit. It's now turning an interesting purple color.

All hail the purple glowing plot bunny.

Quite possibly one of the by-products of the Glow Cloud that managed to survived being dropped from the sky.

I'm in training for the next week. That's 40 hours completely free for you to use.

::types and sends them off::

There you go. They're yours. Use them as you will.

Thank you! Donation accepted!
X-parrotxparrot on October 27th, 2013 09:29 am (UTC)
I would donate time to that cause! ...Given a temporal transference mechanism. And free time to donate. But yeah...it wouldn't have to be too~ long, would it? Because I want to know what happens...

...So the other scientists who came with Carlos, those who had an existence outside Night Vale, are they vanished along with the town? Do formerly co-written papers only have one author? Poor Carlos...(he does suffer so well...!)
formerly lifeinsomniacjoonscribble on October 27th, 2013 01:49 pm (UTC)

I have a tough time keep stories short. They tend to morph into multi-chapter things that drag on for eons.

...So the other scientists who came with Carlos, those who had an existence outside Night Vale, are they vanished along with the town?

No, the research time is just in a different town. A perfectly normal, American town which is where everyone else thinks Carlos has been for the past year.
X-parrotxparrot on October 27th, 2013 10:57 pm (UTC)
Ahhh, fascinating! So what do people think Carlos has been studying in this normal town? (or do they just think he's a crackpot?)

(I am so very curious how Carlos and his team ever got a grant to study "the most scientifically interesting town in America" - either the man can write one hell of a research proposal; or there is something out there with ulterior interest in Night Vale (...StrexCorp? Is it coincidence that they bought out Station Management only a year after Carlos came to town...))
formerly lifeinsomniacjoonscribble on October 28th, 2013 12:16 am (UTC)

I really want to know what sort of scientist Carlos is. For the purposes of this plot bunny, I decided to make him a paleoseismology specifically but that this team includes scientists from various fields that are related to what he's studying.

So what do people think Carlos has been studying in this normal town? (or do they just think he's a crackpot?)

Carlos finds out that he's supposedly been sending reports and articles for the entire year he's been researching and they've all been well-received. Just normal, boring reports about predictability of earthquakes. Of course Carlos has ZERO memory of any of this.
