Latest Night Vale episode
Okay, so one person of my flist is into this podcast but I just listened to the latest episode and I need to write about it because BECAUSE.

Okay, I'm a sucker for flashback episodes and origin storylines so I was thrilled that we got to hear a little bit of 15 year old Cecil via an old cassette tape adult Cecil unearthed. But of course it all goes tremendously creepy from there.

I'd always found Night Vale to be creepy but in a friendly, cozy sort of way. This was the first one that made me question how I was going to get any sleep tonight because it is the sort of thing that will give me NIGHTMARES. Old cassette recordings, flickering images, missing family members, covered up mirrors AAAAHHH!!

But we learned some interesting facts. The biggest one for me was that Cecil's full name is Cecil Gershwin Palmer. Eh. I'm a little annoyed with the Palmer since it seems like an obvious homage to Twin Peaks but it's a small point. Cecil also had a brother (!!!) and both the brother and his mother disappeared shortly after Cecil began interning at the radio station. That's right. Cecil was an intern. Who survived. Or did he? Adult Cecil has zero memories of making this tape or any of the events the 15 year old Cecil talks about. This includes having a brother. The episode ends with him destroying the tape but clearly freaked out. Which makes all of us who just listened to this podcast.

There's some wild speculations going on right now that Kevin of Desert Bluffs is Cecil's brother. But oddly my head canon suddenly became that Kevin is actually this 15 year old Cecil we just listened to and the Cecil we've been hearing this entire time is a clone. Original Cecil was a little too free thinking so Station Management gave him over to StrexCorp who truly brainwashed him and gave him a whole new identity and made him Kevin of Desert Bluffs. Meanwhile Station Management created a new person that they named Cecil and placed at the Night Vale radio station. Yes, that's a lot of head canon for such few information but this is what the Night Vale podcast does to people. But along with the head canon, I have many, many more questions:

1. What happened to Cecil's mother and brother? Mainly his mother. Where is she? What the hell was he becoming that she hid from him? Cecil seemed to take her hiding as a good, happy thing. Is that standard Night Vale stuff or was he brainwashed into thinking that?

2. So if all the mirrors at the station are covered...are all the mirrors at Cecil's house also covered? Wouldn't Carlos wonder about that or is the list of things he finds bizarre in this town just too long now? Also, Cecil's mother has warned him about mirrors before. Nice return of that eerie, seemingly throwaway comment.

3. Is the voice of 15 year old Cecil done by Joseph Fink? They sound vaguely alike and 15 year old Cecil didn't get a voice credit.

EDIT: Nope, the voice of 15 year old Cecil was also done by Cecil Baldwin. They just sped it up 5%, according to Joseph Fink to take out all the bass. Awesome! Also, does this mean that to me Fink sounds like a 15 year old boy?

4. WHAT IS HAPPENING? That sums up my entire reaction. WHAT IS HAPPENING?! This podcast didn't have a plot when I first started listening. Now it's like one huge conspiracy theory and I NEED TO KNOW WHAT'S HAPPENING!!

Here via random surfing (and, okay, googling "Cecil Gershwin Palmer" because I can't be the only one secretly thrilled that we have a full name for Cecil), but I just wanted to say that your headcanon is very cool. And knowing Night Vale, not exactly unlikely.

In regards to the mirrors, I found myself thinking of Ep26, and Cecil saying, As my mother used to tell me, “Someone’s going to kill you one day, Cecil, and it will involve a mirror. Mark my words, child!”

I assumed it was his mother trying to protect him but I'm not entirely sure what happened to 15 year old Cecil at the end of the tape -- but whatever it was, it was creepy.

I'm pleased that you stumbled across this entry! It's nice to see a fellow LJ person who listens to Night Vale.

It was. I also now get the feeling that Cecil's mother isn't from Night Vale so it's bizarre nature bothers her a little more than it does Cecil.

Just ONE person!? How can that be!? Surely I'm not the only person you know who has discovered this unbelievably great show. D:

It hurts that I'm not caught up enough to read this post. *whimpers*

Let me know when you're all caught up. The latest episode is incredible. It hit just about everything I'd want out of a show that brings the creepy.

I'm someone else who found your LJ by googling "Cecil Gershwin Palmer". I love it that we've finally got Cecil's full name. And very cool that they got 15yo Cecil by speeding up Cecil Baldwin.

After the previous episode, I'm glad that they didn't do too much with StrexCorp this time.

Ahhhh that was Cecil Baldwin sped up??? That explains how he got the nuances of his voice so well!!

--Yeah I finally listened to the ep and AHHHHH. Yeah. This was the creepiest ep of the show (this one and The Sandstorm pt.2, Cecil in Desert Bluffs thoroughly freaked me out...) But this ep, with the forgotten brother and interning and not having any idea what was actually going on...ahhhhh!

Maybe oddly, I didn't think this was really Cecil's backstory? Or, I was doubtful that this was the Cecil we know at all? I didn't imagine as far as a clone scenario (and Kevin being Cecil's brother didn't occur to me, ahhhh that's creepy too...) But between him not remembering the tape, or remembering any of the events on it, or the existence of his brother...otoh, the name at least has to be correct, or else Cecil would've presumably remarked on it not being his name? (...unless it's common for the community radio people to go by pseudonyms. Which it might be. Frankly, if I were on Night Vale radio, I would be reeeeeally nervous repeating my own real name too many times, it might invite...things. Bad things.) And if the name was right...still. I was almost wondering if the flickering thing who wasn't the Old Woman wLiYH was somehow the real Cecil...

Has Carlos actually been over to Cecil's house? Or maybe Cecil doesn't own mirrors at all, which would be less noticeable than if the ones there were covered. But Cecil does know what he himself looks like, because he recognized Kevin as resembling him, but for his eyes and smile.

I am so curious if there is an actual coherent story here or if it's Lost style make-it-up-as-they-go-along? They've admitted to making up a lot of it but I don't know if they've said whether they actually know what Cecil, or Night Vale's, deal is...

I had this exact same thought when Cecil said his full name to whatever was flickering in his corners as a child. You don't tell random darkness your full name, kid!!

I was almost wondering if the flickering thing who wasn't the Old Woman wLiYH was somehow the real Cecil...

After reading some other speculations, I do wonder if the flickering darkness is sort of the soul of Night Vale that takes over various human hosts in order to broadcast certain information or...something.

Has Carlos actually been over to Cecil's house?

Based on the "Condos" episode I sort of assumed they'd been to each other's houses but perhaps that's just me speculating.

Joseph Fink has said that they've planned out at least this year or more less but if that actually includes their ultimate conception of what Night Vale and who Cecil is was not clear.

OOOOOH wow. That makes so much sense, if Cecil is literally the Voice of Night Vale. It would explain why he seems to have so much influence - like, I get the impression that Carlos is pretty popular in town, and I was assuming it was because of Cecil going on about him - and everyone listens to the radio. But if it works in the reverse - that it's not that everyone listens to the radio, but that Cecil is speaking for the town...

I haven't been reading much speculation about WtNV - partly because I am really unsure whether there actually is a coherent story and if there isn't I'll have more fun if I don't think about it too much; and partly because I'm writing a shortish fic and I didn't want idea contamination until I finished. But this is such a cool idea...!

Ooh! Fic! I'm excited for that. I got randomly bit by a plot bunny a few days ago but I can already tell it would be a long story and I don't have time to write it. As an aside, the plot bunny had three eyes and four ears.
X-parrotxparrot on October 24th, 2013 11:15 pm (UTC)
Ahahah yeah that sounds like a NV plotbunny!

(question, would you be up for a canon-checking beta, in the next day or two? (I'm hoping to post this weekend.) The fic's complete at 9K words and I don't need a full edit, but I've only listened once to a lot of eps so I'm not sure of all my details; would like to check that there's nothing outright contradicted by canon. If you're willing, pm me your email and I'll send it on!)
