Sherlock Holmesian Things
Sir Ian McKellen has been tapped to play Sherlock Holmes in the film adaptation of A Slight Trick of the Mind, a novel by Mitch Cullin.

I admit, I've never heard of this novel before but after reading the summary, I kind of want to. It doesn't feature anyone else from the canon other than Holmes but I rather like the idea of seeing what Holmes might be like in his 90s and about to confront his own mortality. I'll flag it to get to when I have time.

Speaking of time, my first full week of the fall semester concluded today. It's busy but the good kind of busy. Other than dissertation, I'm really just doing clinical work which is what I enjoy most. I actually have less time this year than I did previous years but it feels like the time is going to a good place.

The start of my life back in the thick of psychology though has clearly had an impact on my ficcing. I wrote half of the next chapter for Human Nature and after a bit I looked at what I'd written and realized I had leaked psychoanalytic theories all over it. I better edit that a little before moving on.

As much as I don't feel we need more Holmes adaptations, I do think that looks good. And it's also quite exciting for me to be interested in something that is currently popular. I'm usually ahead or behind the trends.

I used to have that happen when I was doing my Philosophy course. I have one half-written story which starts off with Harry Dresden spouting Artistotle for the first two paragraphs.

I think it'll be nice to have a Sherlock Holmes adaptation that doesn't focus so much on how handsome, stylish, or action-packed Holmes is which seems to be the trend as of late. And by late I just mean Sherlock and the RDJ films.

I feel like there has to be a nice balance between the 'action!!!' of the adaptations and the 'we sat and talked in a dignified fashion and the culprit escaped on a boat that sunk so I don't have to write a resolution' of the books.

I just hope, reading the summary, we aren't getting another love struck Holmes. I'm not entirely sure why people have felt so compelled to give him a love interest. Watson is there to be love struck. There's nothing wrong with a celibate/asexual hero. No one gives Poirot love interests.

Well, none that worked out. He had a couple in the TV series.

Based on reviews of this, I'm wondering if it's more Holmes looking back on his life as he faces death and asking himself if he missed out on something by being a brain without a heart. I'm hoping for something more contemplative as a man looks back on his long life rather than him just falling in love.

I haven't seen all the episodes of the series, especially the earlier ones. I know he admires a few women in the books, but does he actually date any in the series?

Ooh, that sounds interesting. Yes, I would like that, I think.

He sort of dates that one woman who turns out to be a thief. She's referenced again in Murder in Mesopotamia, I think.

The other woman who he left back in Belgium he didn't exactly date, but he did fall in love with her (she gave him that lapel pin of the vase he wears all the time) and more or less stayed in love with her. The episode were you see how they met and when they see each other again in present time was rather bittersweet.

Ah, I have seen none of those episodes, I'm afraid. I do remember him having a bit of a crush on his version of Irene Adler in the books, some Russian countess who's name I can't recall. Is she the thief?

I'm off to bed. G'night, ma chere!

Yup, that's her.

"The Chocolate Box" features the other woman if you want to give that a view.

Good night!

Countess Vera Rossakoff is her name, Google tells me. I think she was in his version of Reichenbach, too. The Big Four?

I really need to get John and Hastings talking about how their lives are essentially the same.

"Mine pretended to be dead."
"Mine too! Did yours pretend to be his own twin?"
"...No."

Thanks! I've been trying to convince Zip to send me some of the discs, but someone has lost one and they seem to be taking their sweet time about finding a replacement. And since the last video store in my city closed down a couple of months ago, Zip and Youtube are all I have left.

Heeheehee! I can imagine John's face at the idea that Poirot has outdone Sherlock in the Extreme Measures department.

I'm picturing Sherlock coming back with a fake moustache and pretending to be his own twin and John just going o_O
