Who, Doctor? Who?
I might be late to the game when I say that Matt Smith is leaving his post as the Doctor.

At first when I heard this I thought, "That wasn't very long." Only to realize he'd have been at the role for 4 years which is a year longer than David Tennant. Have I really been away from this show for 4 years?? In any case, unless the new Doctor happens to be an actor I adore, I'll probably continue to stay away. Something happened to me and this show when Moffat took the reins and I've never been able to come back fully. I caught a few episodes here or there and I did see the Christmas one that heavily featured Clara. But yeah...the magic still remains rather inert for me.

And Ben Edlund just left Supernatural! 'Scrib, this is a painful day. He was my favorite writer on the show. He wrote "On the Head of a Pin," "The End," "The French Mistake," and "The Man Who Would Be King." Plus he was so delightfully quirky in all his interviews, and he wrote the characters at their best. AND HE LIKES SYMBOLISM. AUGH, WHY AM I LOSING THE SYMBOLISM-LOVING WRITER OF SUPERNATURAL?

I'm upset by today. *grumps around*

Really?! "On the Head of a Pin" remains one of the best episodes that show has come out with.

Hmmm. Is he moving to another show or just leaving SPN?

I KNOW. And the cinematography in that episode is ace. Aaaauuugh, that episode was beautiful.

He's moving to Eric Kripke's show, Revolution. It's that show about technology disappearing and people having to live without it, which is a topic I do find interesting, yeah, but the show itself is so disappointing and I can't make it through an episode.

I think it's Kripke's attempt to give Revolution more ratings, since I believe it's not doing so well. I AM SO BITTER ABOUT THIS. Edlund seemed to care about Dean and Cas' friendship a lot, and I'm...well, I won't deny I am partial to that. I like shows that stress that more than one important personal connection is needed to live a meaningful life.

I had no idea this was even Kripke's show. I was still holding onto the idea that we'd eventually see that Octocobra show that was talked about in the French Mistake.

I think it's said best that Sam is the person Dean loves most in the world and Castiel is the one who understands Dean best. That was always the most interesting part to me about this entire Winchester relationship. Sam knows Dean but he has a hard time getting what drives Dean half the time and miscommunication abounds.

Hee! I dunno. I feel like Supernatural was Kripke's one hit wonder. But then, I do make room for the fact that I have not given attention to his other projects, so I suppose I could be mistaken.

I think it's said best that Sam is the person Dean loves most in the world and Castiel is the one who understands Dean best.

Well said, on all points! I feel like a petty Cas!fan. I'm very nervous now that Castiel isn't going to receive any kind of care from any other character in the upcoming season. I actually felt I had reason to expect that happening, perhaps even with a fair amount of consistency, but now I'm a little skittish and worrisome.

I feel I may be overreacting, though, ahhhh.
formerly lifeinsomniacjoonscribble on June 3rd, 2013 12:41 am (UTC)
I'm also a little concerned about what will happen to Castiel in the upcoming season. The fact that he's now human is basically making fanon now canon which always makes me a bit nervous. But I guess we'll see.

Oh, I started reading a book that you might like. The main character feels like if somehow Aziraphale and Castiel raised a child and Crowley was the cool uncle, it would be this person. It's about a man named Gabriel who wakes up all bloodied in an apartment with no memory of who he is or what he's doing living in Budapest. All he can tell is that he's rich, apparently obsessed with demonology and angelology, and animals fear him.

I'm less than halfway through and it's so far pretty engaging. It's called The Ninth Circle by Alex Bell.

I watched the first two episodes of Doctor Who this lat series and...promptly forgot to watch the rest. So, apparently I'm done as well. The last episode I watched was actually really good, but almost entirely because the music was amazing and you can cover a multitude of sins with me if you have the music. I just don't like Eleven, and it has nothing to do with Smith as an actor, but where they've taken the character. Plus, I don't care for any of his companions, possibly with the exception of Rory's dad and hie's not even a companion.

So, yeah, unless they cast someone amazing, I probably won't be tuning in. Unless Moffat lets someone else take over as show runner.

Yeah, this was always my biggest problem. I didn't like Amy and by some extension Rory and I already had issues with Clara.

This is SO true.
The Writer They Call Tay: DW: Rose and Nine in doorwayawanderingbard on June 3rd, 2013 02:24 am (UTC)
Rory got kinda badass near the end and was the only redeeming factor for me. I have a bad ass nurse in the family and enjoy watching them on telly. But yeah, Clara I don't care for at all. One Mary Sue after another. I think I'm supposed to care about her mystery, but I don't.

This is SO true.

Seriously, I would recommend listening to the hymn from 'The Rings of Akhaten'. It's so joyful.

It's been pointed out to me that previous DW seasons were largely about how the Doctor sees his companions, and recent seasons are about how people see the Doctor. It puts the viewer into the mindset of idol worship rather than sympathizing with someone we can see ourselves as, and that's an uncomfortable position to be in. I think this is a large part of why I don't like the show too much anymore.

I feel like Moffat tried to counteract this by giving us companions who worship the Doctor but who are also seemingly intelligent. But they can never surpass the Doctor. On one hand, I get that. He is a Time Lord. But I liked how in previous seasons his companions always gave the Doctor a perspective he could never quite have given who he was. That was always their not insignificant contribution.

It reminds me a lot of how Elementary used Joan Watson in their season finale. She'll never match Holmes in terms of his observational genius but she has a perspective on humans he just doesn't naturally have which makes her essential.

The Writer They Call Tay: DW: Ten - 'brainy specs activate'awanderingbard on June 3rd, 2013 02:42 pm (UTC)
I think I've said this before, but this is how Moffat writes Sherlock, too. John becomes an idol worshipper in his hands, whereas he remains confident and capable in the rest of the episodes.

The whole idea for Who, for me at least, is that normal people can save the world. The Doctor is there to be fun and sweep you off your feet, so that you learn how awesome you are and then you save the world. Rose became Bad Wolf, Martha roamed the Earth telling the story of the Doctor, Donna fused with Ten to get the knowledge she needed.

I suppose Amy brings back the Doctor with the power of her love, but that's again putting a female character in the position of using her female ability to love to save the day. If you look at the nuances between Jack and Amy, Jack has a whole symphony of notes even solely on Who, and Amy is very one note. She's sassy, she's Scottish. She's selfish, and no one comments. She's rude to Rory, and no one comments.

And then there's River Song, who is probably the most Mary Sue character I've ever seen.

I think Moffat writes good single episodes. Some of my favourites from the Russell T. Davies days were his episodes. Even his female characters were better defined. But he doesn't seem to have sustained writing abilities. I think he's better in small doses.

I think I'm supposed to care about her mystery, but I don't.

I quickly read the spoiler for her mystery. Even with the reveal I don't care.

I just read the spoiler myself, and, yeah. There is nothing I dislike more than someone sticking in a character into a scenario where they have not previously been and declaring them vital to the plot. That's fanfic 101.
