A New OC For My Arsenal
It's unlikely that this character will get much writing action since I'm completely bogged down with other things right now. Still, I took the trouble of creating a bio of sorts for him so to make myself feel like I didn't completely waste my time, I'm putting it up in the cut below. I used some questions from THIS to help guide me.

This OC is a Warden in training within the Dresden Files TV-verse. He is also a completely angst-free character which is a rarity for me.

Part 1: The Basics

What is your full name?
Derek Jongchan Kang

Where and when were you born?
I was born on a wintery day in New York on December 20th, 1986.

Who are/were your parents?
My dad’s name is Eric Jinho Kang. He’s a trained ballet dancer who used to tour with the Miriam Tanner Company and has now opened up his own studio in San Francisco. My mom’s name is Lily Shinae Byun. She’s still a warden for the High Council and heads up the Local Forces Liaison division at the San Francisco branch.

Despite having jobs that both require a lot of discipline and focus, my parents are surprisingly easy going. I think it helped that both of them from a young age knew they wanted to be things that most people didn’t expect of them. While my mom is a wizard, my dad isn’t. Against all odds they met and made a connection at a bar of all places. Mom was a junior warden then and Dad had just joined Miriam Tanner. They were each with a different set of friends who were all celebrating something with lots of alcohol but because Mom had an early shift and Dad was performing the next day they weren't drinking. As the only two sober people in the room, they completely fell in love. They like to tell us that story as a lesson in the rewards sobriety can bring you.

Do you have any siblings? What are/were they like?
I have one identical twin brother named Winston. He followed in my dad’s footsteps (or dance steps, haha!!) and is a contemporary dancer with the Ivan Baron Dance Company. Thanks to his job he’s been just about everywhere in the world. If a country wants to see dancing, he’s been there.

Winston and I are a lot alike, although Winston is a little bit more disciplined and focused than I am. He says it’s because he’s the older brother (by like all of ten minutes). He’s strangely not someone who enjoys performing in front of people that much. He just enjoys dancing in general. As a kid, I was bigger on dancing in front of crowds. Because of this when we were younger our parents got it into their heads that Winston was going to become the warden and I was going to become the dancer. When we got to be 10, we pretended we were each other so he could sneak off to my classes and I could go to his training. We didn’t fool anyone but our teachers were nice enough to let us think that for about a week.

Where do you live now, and with whom?
I now live in an apartment in London which is where I’m currently assigned to finish out my training. I technically live with Winston as in his name is on the lease but he travels so much that at this point I have rotating roommates.

What is your occupation?
Currently I’m a junior warden for High Council in their London branch. Fingers crossed if I pass my final examinations the ‘junior’ gets taken off!

Write a full physical description of yourself.
I’m 6’0 with dark hair and brown eyes. I personally think I’m in excellent shape thanks to all the physical training we wardens are put through. Winston teases me, though, that compared to him I’m a weakling.

What does your voice sound like?
Morgan once described it as ‘incessant.’ Which is pretty fair.

Part 2: Growing Up

How would you describe your childhood in general?
Pretty happy! I mean, I’ve had my share of disappointments because, you know, I’m a human. But I’ve been very lucky in that my parents are happily married and let me decide what I wanted to do within reason. They only ever stressed that I think carefully before making a commitment and sticking with it.

How much schooling have you had?
My formal general education goes all the way through high school. Starting from age 13 I apprenticed for my wardenship under Martin Hagegard while continuing with my dance studies. Martin was big on the idea that the physical training I got from my movement classes would help me as a field warden (which was totally true!). When I hit 18 I trained with Martin exclusively.

Did you enjoy school?
Most of it. Some of the general education classes, sure, were a little boring. Especially calculus. I will literally never use calculus for anything EVER.

Where did you learn most of your skills and other abilities?
My warden-ing skills I learned from Martin. My mom’s very supportive of my chosen career but is very hands off with my actual training since she wanted me to learn on my own as much as possible and develop my own strengths. It’s the same with my dad for Winston.

As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
When I was around 6 I did want to be a dancer. I really liked the idea of being able to lift people and spin around and kick things. But hey, you can do that as a warden too!

Part 4: Beliefs And Opinions

Are you basically optimistic or pessimistic?
I’m an optimist. In my experience, things tend to always work out in the end. You just have to keep calm and carry on.

What is your greatest fear?
Phobia wise? I hate spiders. I’m man enough to admit it. With the eight legs and the making webs and ack!

What are your views on sex?
Uh, it’s great?

Are you able to kill? Under what circumstances do you find killing to be acceptable or unacceptable?
I’m trained to. I personally believe that killing is only acceptable in cases of self defense or defending the innocent. And then really as an absolute last resort

Do you believe in the existence of soul mates and/or true love?
Definitely. Winston’s found his (he's getting married next year!) and my parents found each other so hopefully I’ll make it a clean family sweep by finding mine soon.

What do you believe makes a successful life?
That’s a pretty subjective question. I guess if you’re happy at the end of the day and feel like you have a purpose for waking up each morning then your life has been pretty successful.

Do you hide your true self from others, and in what way?
Everyone tells me I'm awful at hiding my true self. It's true and I don't really see what the problem is. Although, I see why as a warden I should try to be a little more subtle or at least a bit more stoic. Martin once told me if I ever have to do Good Warden/Bad Warden, I should never ever play Bad Warden.

Do you have any biases or prejudices?
Other than that spiders should be eradicated from the world, nope.

Part 5: Relationships With Others

Who is the most important person in your life, and why?
Probably my brother. We did everything together when we were kids. Even when we both got super serious about our careers, we still hung out as much as possible. He’s someone who has known me inside and out since the day we were born.

Who is the person you respect the most, and why?
The most? Just one? Yikes, that’s impossible. I respect my parents for the way they lead their lives and the values they’ve instilled in me. I respect my brother for his discipline and doing what he loves. I respect Martin for all the wisdom he’s imparted to me during my training. And surprisingly, I respect Warden Donald Morgan. He’s like the hardest hard ass ever but that’s what I admire about him. He’s so freaking focused which I know sometimes scares people (me included) but you have to respect a guy who knows who he is and sticks to it. An earthquake couldn’t shake his principles.

Do you have a spouse or significant other? If so, describe this person.
Sadly, no, not right now.

Have you ever been in love? If so, describe what happened.
I’ve never been in the sort of punch-you-in-the-face, I-see-the-world-in-technicolor-now sort of love.

How close are you to your family?
Really close. I still go home to San Francisco for the major holidays.

Part 6: Wizarding

Preferred elemental evocation?
I don’t have a preference. I’m pretty comfortable with all of them.

What is your greatest strength when it comes to wizarding?
I’m really good at doing complex spells on the fly. Ad-libbing last minute incantations and jerry rigging potions with the materials at hand are my specialties. I’m totally the MacGuyver of wizarding!

Greatest weakness?
I have problems focusing for extensive stretches at a time so any spell that requires sheer long term concentration and complex preparation I tend to lose track of.

Tools for wizardry?
I have the standard staff as a Junior Warden. No swords of steel for me until I reach the title of Warden. In general, I’m not a huge fan of using staffs and wands. For bigger spells they definitely help but I’ve always done better work just using gestures and incantations.

His name is so much fun. His mom's name is even cooler, though. *G*

As the only two sober people in the room, they completely fell in love. They like to tell us that story as a lesson in the rewards sobriety can bring you.

D'awwwww, that is such a cute story. I can picture them chatting long into the night while their friends hurl inside the bathroom next to them, haha.

I technically live with Winston as in his name is on the lease but he travels so much that at this point I have rotating roommates.

Hmm, I like this idea. It makes me wonder if poor Derek ever has to deal with some seriously strange people amidst this cast of rotating roommates. XD

I am getting the sense that Derek's brother is his weakness! I hope the bad guys don't see it, too! Lovely character. I like the optimism and his undaunted moral center.

Really close. I still go home to San Francisco for the major holidays.

Hee! So I pretty much automatically love a character 200% more when the character has a fondness for San Francisco. YES! I like this boy.

His name is so much fun.

Thanks! I named him Derek in honor of graphic novelist Derek Kirk Kim whom I adore. And I liked that if you addressed him by his full Korean name "Kang Jongchan" it sort of rhymes. Yes, I amuse myself this way.

There's a story somewhere about how one time Derek had to house a potential suspect because the wardens had run out of space in wizard jail.

I'm toying with the idea that Winston rarely uses his magic since his career doesn't really call for it so his abilities have atrophied in comparison to his brother. Hopefully there will never be a case of mistaken identity.

So I pretty much automatically love a character 200% more when the character has a fondness for San Francisco.

Derek was nearly a New Yorker but I was sick of having all my wardens from New York. It was time to have someone from sunny California and San Fran is SO LOVELY.

I become ridiculously happy when I find a name that flows effortlessly from its first name to its surname. It's just so neat to have a name that's so nice to listen to being said.

There's a story somewhere about how one time Derek had to house a potential suspect because the wardens had run out of space in wizard jail.

O_O

DON'T TOY WITH ME LIKE THAT, 'SCRIB! * flails everywhere* Hee! Now I'm picturing Derek trying so cheerfully to be hospitable to an escaped convict whose body is too massive to even fit on the couch, and who only speaks in grunts that Derek suspects might be ill-formed death threats. Of course, Derek is super-nice, so he just takes the convict's shoes and coat, puts them both somewhere dry, and generally frets to try to make sure everything is comfortable for the houseguest. Meanwhile, the convict stops looking murderous and instead starts looking confused and genuinely alarmed by the way Derek is reacting to him WITHOUT FEAR. Like, WHO IS THIS CRAZY TALL BROWN-EYED DUDE WITH THE WILD HAIR WHO KEEPS TRYING TO FORCE FEED ME PEPPERMINT TEA AND SCONES? WHO!?

But then they become best friends, and the massive convict turns up to save Derek every now and then when a little manpower is needed, and Derek saves the convict when magic is needed. It turns into a very valuable friendship.

Umm...I believe I just started making fanfic for your character, 'Scrib. O_o

Yes!!! Oh wow, even thinking about San Francisco makes me want to leap around with glee. ^_^

AHahahahaaa!!! My work here is done.

I like the idea of the suspect being this huge hulking figure and just being constantly befuddled (in a completely angry, frustrated, glaring way) at Derek's cheeriness. BECAUSE DEREK KANG IS A WARDEN DAMMIT AND IT LOOKS ALL WRONG.

I have this idealization in my mind that everyone in SF is happy and friendly. I know this is incorrect but I can't help it.

Haha! Well, I'm glad to have helped you fulfill that job. Derek is a neat character. I'd welcome seeing him in your writings someday.

Yes! Aren't contradictions like that perfect? I think convict guy needs a name.

I have this idealization in my mind that everyone in SF is happy and friendly. I know this is incorrect but I can't help it.

I'm so glad I'm not the ony one who thinks that way! Things there seemed so welcoming, polite and energetic. And I don't think it was just because I was vacationing. I think I could live there. I'd visit the sea lions every night and listen to the creaking of the docks and climb impossibly steep, bumpy sidewalks alongside ancient, red-painted old trollies chugging on by... *happy sigh* I mean, I'm not ignorant to the fact that it has problems, but I felt happiness so easily in that wonderful place. Have you walked the bridge?

I think convict guy needs a name.

Winston's keys were still in the lock when his eyes fell on the not insubstantial body mass currently hunched on their suddenly very much dwarfed sofa.

"Uh. You weren't here when I left?" he queried. Giant Body Mass gave a noncommittal grunt in response.

"That's Philip," Derek introduced from his place in the kitchen area. "He witnessed a murder. Well...he THINKS he witnessed a murder. It's unclear and for a little bit we thought maybe he'd done the actual murdering but that got straightened out. The wardens ran out of room so he's been in yours for the last couple of days. I thought you weren't due back until next week." His brother emerged carrying two steaming mugs of what smelled like peppermint tea. "I can crash on the sofa since you're back," he offered brightly.

Winston looked over at Philip who was now flipping through a wayward magazine. Only it looked like a pamphlet in his frying pan hands. Winston backed up through the still open door and pulled out his keys.

"I'll be at Zoe's," Winston called out as a goodbye.

Derek shrugged. "Suit yourself." Philip offered another grunt. "Tea?" Derek asked. He pushed a mug with a smiling lion just under Philip's nose.

WINSTON! Oh, Mr. Master of Pointing Out The Obvious. I love him already.

Ajfkhjksdfjkhks! They speak brightly to each other! Aww!

And Philip, I'm so glad I triggered his existence. I can tell he's lovable too, the giant oaf.

He pushed a mug with a smiling lion just under Philip's nose.

BAHAHAHA!!! And now I'm picturing Philip having at first been really offended by all the childish, cutesy mugs Dererk has kept handing him the entire time Philip's been there, until that one day Philip had free rein to explore and realized, in horror (and maybe also, though he'd never admit it, a brush of fondness so startlingly vivid it nearly toppled him over), that Derek's collection of mugs is nothing but cutesy stuff. And that collection is ridiculously extensive and quite embarrassing, spilling not just all over his cup cabinet but also stuffed in dozens into his cereal cabinet, too. In fact, the lion mug is the strongest, toughest-looking tea mug Derek owns, and Philip realizes suddenly that this is why Derek keeps giving it to Philip, to ease his wounded pride.

Eee! I'm getting really happy about these three.
formerly lifeinsomniacjoonscribble on September 21st, 2012 04:02 am (UTC)
I had this earlier idea that Philip would be momentarily stunned at the sight of someone who looks identical to Derek coming in from the outside when Derek is in the kitchen.

But OBVIOUSLY during his stay, Derek showed Philip the photos of his brother that are all over the place.

In fact, the lion mug is the strongest, toughest-looking tea mug Derek owns, and Philip realizes suddenly that this is why Derek keeps giving it to Philip, to ease his wounded pride.

HAHAHAAAA!!!! Poor, poor Philip.

And yes, Derek totally has cute mugs and mugs from all over the damn place because Winston collects them from his travels. They just refuse to have one of Hello Kitty because it's too damn obvious.
Astoundingly fond of avocados and rainy weather.: TemptingFateguardian_chaos on September 21st, 2012 04:14 am (UTC)
But Philip is a practical sort, not easily impressed or thrown, and every bit the stalwart in a storm that he appears to be. Even before his brain caught up to the fact that he was seeing twins, he'd just dismissed the matter of there being two of them as "some stupid warden shit, probably." and just kept drinking his tea.

Ag, but what is this murder that Philip saw? And why is he not sure if he saw it/had done it/etc.? And why did the Council care so much about that murder that they felt Philp had to be contained somehow? I wanna know!

Sadly, I have no clue. I just let Derek talk and all that randomness came out and I have no clue what any of it actually means.

Well, I do hope you'll let me know when you find out, because it sounds like the edges of some larger, more terrifying threat that's seeping slowly into place, and I am rabidly curious!

Ah, and if you would please kindly traipse over to my journal and pick a number, that'd be great! I'm going to finish your John/Sarah prompt in the meanwhile, now that I've regained a small sense of consciousness. XD

completely angst-free character Who are you? ;) And on top of that in the Dresden Files? ;) :D

I am really liking Derek! And would love to meet him and his family they seem to really work! Thats such a strange notion for me! ;) A warden and a dancer! It amazes me always how do you come up with such good background for your characters! :D

I love all your original characters, but I think my favourite will always be Davis Bellamy because I am an angst junkie! :D

I liked the idea of a warden ending up with someone who was artistically inclined.

but I think my favourite will always be Davis Bellamy because I am an angst junkie! :D

Haha! Yes! I do love my angst and for that, it really is Davis. To think that at one point I was going to give him a perfectly normal childhood that was perfectly happy. But then I remembered who I was. :)
