Apparently the French Are Scary People
I couldn't stop laughing while going through this article in the Guardian.

I just had this image of French parents reading their kids a bedtime story. And instead of it being "Goodnight, moon. Goodnight, cow jumping over the moon. Goodnight, light" it would be "Goodnight, isolated bed. Goodnight, creature living under the bed. Goodnight, broken nightlight."

If you go to her blog, the Kuma Kuma one is absolutely my favorite. Way to teach little kids ennui before they even hit double digit age.

Omg! Those are seriously fucked up books. No hyperbole. In some cases I think it's the illustrations that make it worse. French illustrators seem to favour the 'drawn by a mentally disturbed four year old' style. As someone who was scared of everything as a child, almost literally, I am glad I did not grow up in France.

Now I'm picturing a bunch of children sitting around a coffee house in black berets, drinking juice from sippy cups with skulls on them, discussing the angoisse existentielle of toilet training.

The illustrations TOTALLY make it worse. Especially the one for "Our Love Transports Us" or whatever the translation is. The shadow falling over the kid in the park? It's a horror movie shot.

I do wonder why we don't hear of more therapy cases from France.

I couldnt resist traumatizing sharing this with my mother. There are so many favorite to choose from, 'How Papa killed his Aunt', 'The Silent Child', 'The Visit of the Little Death', the one where the cats are poisoned! O_O Its incredible! >:D

Thank you so much! :D I think I will see hoe many more people I can share traumatize this with! >:D >:D

I... would like to point out that over half these books aren't originally French?

Really?! Which are the ones that aren't? I'm super curious where some of these books actually come from.
